GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Gerahline County C .unci! was held on Thursday moring. Present— Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), R. H. Postleihwaite, R. Mackay, W. Balfour, and R, A. Barker. The Swotary, Mr F, W. Stubbs, was in attendance.

The Chairman made a rather lengthy statement. He explained that the meeting of the Council had been held out of its ordinary course on account of it being necessary for the Council to elec two of their number to represent the County on the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Board on that day (Thursday). He found that the ordinary, business of the Council was not of pressing importance, and as it was of the greatest moment that they should meet on Thursday, he had called the meeting for that day. The arrangement for constituting Waitohi and Seadown Water Supply Districts were now about complete. Lately some planks or, the decking of theTemnka Bridge had been broken by a traction engine. There' was no cause for alarm as to the strength of the bridge, as had the driver of the • ngine kept it over the stringers the mishap would not have occurred. The planks had been broken during the night rimo. Ho would be in favor of the Council adopting some by-law on the matter ; the by-law (1) To fix the time of ■ •roßsing, and to regulate the speed ; (2) That notice be given to the Road Board in whose district the bridge is 24 hours beforehand, and that a man bo sent, to see that the crossing is effected properly ; and (3) That it be imperative on all requiring to use the bridge to separate the engine from the combine by a few feet, so that the weight of .both is not on the one centre at the same time. In addition to these suggestions, (lie Chairman said it was just a question whether it would be desirable to charge traction engines a small fee, as some security that the bridge would not be damaged. The following correspondence was dealt with :

From the residents of the Rangitata Plain, forwarding two petitions, praying that thair district be constituted a water supply district. The land they desired to be irrigated is, roughly speaking, bounded by the river Orari on the south, th» river Rangitata on the North, Mount Peel on the east, and the sea on the west. Mr Postlethwaite gave notice that he would propose at next meeting that a special order be parsed constituting the Rangitata Plain a wafer-race district, under the name of the " Rangitata and Orari Water Supply District,” in accordance with the provisions of the Counties Act 1876 and Amendment Act 1883.

From Mr Jos. Greaves, Woodbury, requesting the Council to assist in obtaining; 10 acres of Education Reserve No. 1191 set apart as a public cemetery. Mr Postlethwaite moved, Mr Balfour seconded, and it was carried—“ That the Education Commissioner be asked to recommend (he Minister of Land to set apart 10 acres of Reserve No. 1191, situate at Woodbury, for the purpose of a public cemetery ; that this Council would strongly recommend this to be done, being of opinion that a cemetery is needed in the locality.” From the Colonial Secretary, stating that particulars of the Seadown Water Supply District were gazetted on 24th September. From the Government Life Association, forwarding forms of application for loansWith respect to the Temuka Bridge, it was decided to authorise the Chairman to get a by-law dealing with traction engines, etc., drafted, and lay it before next meeting. It was unanimously resolved that the Chairman and Mr R. A. Barker be elected by this Council members of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for South Canterbury. The Chairman briefly returned thanks. The Clerk was instructed to write to ihe local bodies at Oamaru and elsewhere, asking what steps they found the best to bate the small bird nuisanc?. The Clerk laid on the table the halfyearly balance-sheet. Accounts amounting to £4O were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
