PUBLIC MEETING AT PEEL FOREST.
A meeting of the ratepayers in Mount Peel Riding of the Geraldine County was held in the Road Board Office, Peel Forest, yesterday, to consider the Timaru Harbor Board’s proposal to borrow a further loan of LIOO,OOO for harbor works. The Hon. J. B. A. Acland presided, and there were about a dozen ratepayers present. The Chairman read a letter from the Chairman of the Timaru Harbor Board asking him to preside, and stating, for the information of the meeting, that no motion could be moved either for or against the proposal, but that full discussion should be invited. The Chairman expressed himself ia favor of the loan. Mr Tripp, who was also in favor of the loan, read a number of extracts from the report of the special meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board held in September. The Rev Mr Barclay, who was present, addressed the meeting, and, although not against the proposal, he thought that a representative of the Harbor Board should have been present to give fuller information, as it seemed to him that the net income of tho Harbor Board for the year 1885 was small in comparison with the amount of money expended on harbor works—viz,, L 227,000.
