The visit of the Governor to Wanganui has been postponed for a week. His Excellency will not leave Wellington till Tuesday next. He will go as far as Parramatta by train, and the iourney from that station to Foxton will be done in a special coach. From Foxton he will travel by rail to Marton where he will bs the guest of Mr Arkwright for several days. On Saturday week he will go down to Wanganui, A large meeting of natives residing on the East Coast of the North Island and in the neighborhood of the Hof Lake district will be held in about a month, for the purpose of considering the land question ond the advisability, of passing their lands through the Native Lands Court. A number of Waikato natives are averse to putting their lands through the Court, and are endeavoring to influence others to the same way of thinking. The meeting will be hold either at Taupo or Rotorua. The Native Minister has received an invitation to be present, which he has accepted. The Hon. Mr Larnach is much improved in health, - It is understood that reductions are to be made in the Armed Constabulary. Several charges reseeding the heads of the Police Department are in contemplation, but noth/ng is definitely settled. It is also intended in some instances to alter the district over which Inspectors have charge.
The vacancy catted in the Defen ce Department by the death of Co'onel Reader will not lie filled up at present.
Regulations under the Foreat Bill are being drawn up, and will be gizetted in a day or two. The Marlborough Meat Freezing Company’s annual meeting of shareholders was held on Wednesday. The, report and balance-sheet shown a deficiency of £157 on I lie year’s operations.
A fire broke out in Maxwell’s Hotel, Hawera, on Wednesday at 9 n.m. The origin is 'mysterious. Tiis fire commenced in the - building no«r the chimney. There is no of the fire having communicated from the fireplace or chimney. The fire was extinguished when about £7O worth of damage was done. The insurances on the building are £2OO in the Northern, £3OO in the Phcanix ; £4OO on the furniture and £3OO on the stock in the Colonial office.
