S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Friday. Present—Mr S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), the Rev. Geo. Barclay, and Messrs John Talbot, M. Gray, R. A. Barker, and G. G. Russell. The Education Department forwarded 60 copies of a drawing book which the Minister of Education had authorised should be used by children in Standards I. and 11., and requested the Board to distribute them among the teachers. The Inspector-General wrote acknowledging the Board’s letter re misstatements as discussed at last meeting, and the Education Department forwarded copies of the Education Act 3877 Amendment Act 1885.

The Architect reported that the buildings at Upper Waitohi Flat were completed and the Committee had taken them over, and that the buildings at Silverstreara would be finished in about a fortnight. He had an additional sum of £5 expended on the fence round the Timaru school.

The Inspector handed in his report on several schools, and stated he had not yet had time to visit the Rangitata re a new school, but hoped to do so before next meeting. He desired the Board to appoint a Committee to arrange for and conduct the acholarship examinations. A deputation from the Temuka School Committee urged on the Board tho necessity of erecting a Master’s house at the side school, as the school and its surroundings suffered greatly through being unprooted. After consideration of the matter it was resolved that the Board, whilst admitting the advantage that would result from the erection of a master’s residence at the Timaru side school, regret ibet their finances do not warrant the matter being entertained at present. The Committee appointed to report on the Board’s staff and the salaries paid them lumded in the result of their labors. It was resolved to adopt the Committee’s recommendations, and the office take the necessary steps to have the report printed and distributed among the teachers, and bring the new scale into operation on the first day ot January, 1866. The following correspondence was read and considered; — From tho Board of Education, Wellington, in reference to pupil teachers’ examinations. —Referred to Dr Anderson, the Board’s Inspector, and the Rev. G. Barclay, to report on by next meeting. From the Convalescent Horae, Christchurch, asking for assistance in a_ movement they proposed making to increase their funds.—Received. From the Silverstream School Committee, stating that under the Special

Powers and Conlracts Ari, icserve N 1691 has been handed over as a school site.—The Board had already arranged this matter* From the Chairman of the newlyappointed Rangitira Committee forwarding the names of Committee, and p irticulars of the householders’ meeting, and stating that the Committee had left him to arrange all matters in connection with the same. After some discussion on the subject of building n school at once, Mr Barclay moved, Mr Talbot seconded, and it was carried—“ That the Chairman, tho Rev. Geo, Barclay, and Mr Talbot be appoimed a Committee to bring up by next meeting a report bearing on school buildings for 1886, showing the Board’s resources, and making recommendations, etc. From the Orari Bridge Committee, asking for a sum of £l3 Ils 6d to be expended >n fencing, buying and fixing anew pump, and procuring a small table for : the sewing mistress,—The Committee were authorised to procure the pump and table; the other items to be reported on by the Building Committee. From the Geraldine Flat Committee, requesting that an addition he made to the School pite.—lt was decided to forward the application to the properquarters attaching the Board’s recommendation (hat it be granted. F.om the Waituna Creek Schoel Committee, stating that the late storms hud blown the school chimney down and done much damage to the building.— Left to the Chairman of the Board *ud the School Committee to deal with. From the Pleasant Point School Consraitte requesting that certain additions be made to the master’s house.—Left to the Building Committee to report on. From the Upper Wuitohi Flat School Committee requesting that £9 13s be granted them for fencing and erecting gates on the new ground.—Granted. From the Geraldine School Committee asking for a new bell, the old one having been cracked and rendered useless.—The Rev, Mr Barclay to report by next meeting. From the Burke’s Pass School Committee stating that the money granted them by the Board had been expended judiciously, but as the costs of improvements had exceeded the grant by tT, they asked for this additional sum.— Application acceded to. From the Hilton School Commi'tee with reference to tho water supply to the school.—Application referred back for more definite informations. In reply to Mr Gray, the Secretary said no word had yet been received : from the Defence Department concerning the buildings used as a school at Albury The Secretary was instructed to send a copy of the new scholarship regulations to the Timaru High School Board of Governors. The Rev. Geo. Barclay, Mr Melville Gray, and Dr Anderson, the Board’s ’lnspector (with power to a.id to their number), were appointed the Scholarship Committee. The Board sanctioned the appointment of Mr Sinclair to the Otaio School, and Mr N. Muller to the Washdyke School, but held over the the recommendation made re teacher for the Upper Waitohi Flat School. Accounts amounting to £220 16s 3d were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
