GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The adjourned monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council took place on Wednesday, Present—Messrs John Talbot (Chairman), R. A. Barker, W. Moody, W. Balfour, and R. H. Postleth^aite. The minutes having been confirmed, correspondence was dealt with as follows ; From Mr U. G. Tripp drawing the Council’s atlention to the gorse growing in the river-bed near his place,, and requesting that the Council should do something to destroy it.—Received. From the Temnka Road Board offering to sell some timber to the Council.— Accepted. From Messrs Gray and Maslin, forwarding account sales of timber sold by them from the Opihi and other bridges. From Mr F. S. Guy, Beaconsfield, applying for a license to slaughter on section 10261, Fareora district, —Granted. From the Property Tax Department re rates on Native lands.

It was decided to take proceedings against defaulting ratepayers. In accordance with notice, Mr Moody moved the following resolution “ That in conformity with the provis'ons of the Counties Act 1876 and Counties Amendment Act 1883, relating to water supply for irrigation purposes, all that portion of the Levels Plains hereafter described and situate in the Gersldino .County, bo constituted on and after 19th September, 1885, a district fo T the purpose of carrying out irrigation works therein under the name of the Seadown Water supply District.”— Carried. Msesrs Mitchell and Stevenson waited on the Council and urged them to get the irrigation works put in hand as speedily as possible. It whs then resolved— “ That It bo advertised once a week for four weeks that it is the intention of the Council to borrow for the construction of water-races in the Waitobi Flat Water Supply District the sum of £2500 to be secured by a special rate upon the said district for the purpose of meeting interest and principal, and that a meeting of ratepayers be called by the Chairman immediately after the expiration of the four weeks mentioned to consider the said proposal in terms of the Counties Act.” A similar resolution was agreed to concerning the Seadown Water Supply District. It wa? decided that the Government Insurance Department should be written to and informed that as soon as the necessary steps have been taken, such, for instance, as taking a poll of the ratepayers, etc., the Council will in all probability require a loan of £7500 for carrying out irrigation works in three separate districts, viz,, Seadown, Rangitata, and Waitohi Flat, the aggregate area to be irrigated being 50,000 acres, and that the preliminary steps now commenced will most likely occupy two months. After passing accounts amounting to £124 6s 10J, the Council adjourned.
