Sept. 14,

Mr Charles Todd, C.M.G., Post-master-General and Superintendent of Telegraphs for South Australia, stales that the cable rates to Adelaide will be eight shillings and eightpence per word for Government and public messages, dependent upon the Indian Government conceding twopence halfpenny per word. I'he Press rates will be two shillings and eightpence per word. The public are dissatisfied with the tariff, and in consequence of the unsatisfactory reductions proposed by South Australia on the overland route, there is some talk of another lino being constructed. Reinforcements of 3000 men despatched to Madagascar have arrived, and Admiral Milot has now assumed offensive operations against the ilovas.

Sir H. Drummond Wolff, Envoy Extraordinary to the Porte, had four meetings with officials appointed by the Sultan to confer with him on the Egyptian question. So far no definite results have been obtained.

A number of rebels made their appearance in this neighborhood to-day. Troops were despatched to disperse them, and in a skirmish which ensued four rebels were killed.

Melbourne, Sept. 14.

Heavy rains have fallen during the past four days in Victoria and Riverina, whore it was greatly required.

Ad rices have bees received here fn m Wilson’s Promontory stating that at 2 o’clock this afternoon Captain ihomson, of the Greenock steamship Gulf ot Carpenteria (1596 tons), arrived with three boats belonging to that vessel. He reports that the Gulf of Carpentena, bound from Newcastle to London via Adelaide, while off Cleft Island, struck upon a rock not marked on the chart. The vessel became a total wreck, sinking in thirty fathoms of water within three hours’ of striking. The crew look to the boats, and effected a lauding at Wilson’s Promontory, The disaster was fortunately unattended by loss of life.

Sydney, Sept. 14,

It is announced that the new cable rates from Europe will be 2s 6J per word for Press messages, and 8s lOd per word for private telegrams.

The cable-repairing steamer Sherard Osborne has arrived here from Singapore, and she proceeds to Tasmania to carry the duplicate cable between that colony and Victoria, after going to New Zealand to repair the Cook Strait cable. Sept, 15.

The 'lnion Steamship Comyany’s s.e. Waihora arrived this afternoon from Auckland.
