Fifty unemployed tradesmen took passage to SydDey by the Waihorayesterday, the Union Company carrying them at reduced fares of £3 19s each.

Mr Dampaey, of Aahburton, has been appointed head master of the Central School, New Plymouth. At the quarterly meeting of the Makirikiri Licensing Committee, Wellington, yesterday, the license of John Robertson, of the Red Lion Hotel, Campbeilto'vn, was cancelled on the ground that the previous licansee, who bad been refused a license, had been carrying on business. Robertson applied for a transfer of lease and management. The Carriers held a meeting at Mastertou on Tuesday, and appointed a deputation to wait on the Minister of Public Works re railway charges, and resolved, if no reduction were made, to form a Compuny to compete with the line to Wellington, charges to be 61 per bale of wool, and 35s per ton for goods. The Hinemoa, with the shipwrecked crew of the Edwin Basaett, arrived at Wellington at 9.30 yesterday morning. A man named Christian Selby, aged thirty-nine, lately an A.B. on the Metope, dropped dead near the Sailors' Home, Lyttelton, last Tuesday night. He had been under the doctor for heart disease before going to the Home. At Chriatchurch on Tuesday a wifebeater named George Ayton was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labor. Mrs Ayton said that the trouble was all caused by drink.
