The cholera epidemic is decreasing in violence in Spain, and also at Marseilles, but at Toulou the disease is spreading, and the number of deaths is on the increase. An outbreak of the disease is also reported at Trivents, in Italy, and great precautions are being taken to prevent its spreading in that country.
It is probable an interview will shortly take place between the Marquis of Salisbury and M. De Freycinet, French Minister for Foreign Affairs. Dieppe is mentioned as the locality of the meeting.

Arrived—Ship Northumberland, with 14,000 carcases of frozen meat, from Napier (left June 4th). The Telegraph Companies interested arc hesitating about agreeing to the proposed reduction in rates, if the German scheme of charges now before the Conference should be finally approved of.
Sept. 1
It is announced that M. De Freycinet has requested the English Government to make full enquiry into the circumstances attending the reported death of Oliver Pain. The steamer Port Darwin sails on the 15th instant for Sydney, taking 300 men as reliefs for the vessels belonging to the Australian squadron. iiir Robert Hart, who was recently appointed to the position of British Minister at Pekin, has resigned that appointment, and will resume his former office of Chinese Commissioner of Customs.
Mr George, of Birmingham, the champion amateur long distune runner, has defeated W. Cummins, of PuMey, the celebrated leng liis'auce man, in a mile race.
Sir M. W. Ri-iloy, M.P. for Northumberland North, has been appointed Financial Secretarj to the Treamry. Constantinople, Aug. 29.
Sir Henry Drummond Wolff, who is charged with i special mission from England to the Porte, hag been received at a special audience by the Sultan. Sir Henry read the Message from Her Majesty the Queen expressing a hope that the Sultan would lend his aid to put an end to the present complications existing in Egypt. The Sultan replied that ho sets great value upon his alliance with the Queen, and that he would appoint suitable persons to discuss the Egyptian question with Sit Drummond Wolff.

Intelligence from Japan states that cholera has made its appearance at Nagasaki.

Melbourne, Sept. 1.
Mr George Augustus Sala will leave Sydney on September 3rd for Auckland, at which plac« he will first lecture in New Zealand.
Sydney, Sept. 1
The trial of the two men arrested for the murder of Constable Hird was concluded to-day, when both prisoners were convicted of manslaughter. The Government have appointed eight new members to the Legislative Council. Parliament will re-aßserable for the despatch ot business on the Bth September.
Hobart, Sept, 1.
The trial of the two men, Keefe and Rice, for complicity in the Beacomfield Bank robbery last year, concluded yeiterday, when bath prisoners were acquitted.
