A torpedo, invented by Mr Jardine, of Wellington, and now uuder offer to the. Government, was tried at Wellington on Tuesday. The special advantages claimed for the invention are cheapness and certainty of action. It resembles the McEvoy torpedo in shape, but instead of being fired by electricity it is fired by pulling a cord connected with the machinery inside, so that that although other torpedoes are often rendered useless by the electric connection being shot away, if the same shonld occur with the Jardine, explosion by this means is still available. The trial was mainly devoted to ascertaining whether the primary charges were affected by submersion, and one containing such a charge was filled with water and allowed to stand in that condition for ten minutes. It was then fired, the explosion proving that no injury had been done to the charges by the submersion. The general result of the trial was satisfactory.
