THE CHOLERA IN SPAIN.

follows j—This week 2741 new cases and 952 deaths- were reported; on July 21st, in Madrid, 15 new cases and 13 deaths were telegraphed. The scourge had invaded Gualaclgara, Huesca, Burgos, Coieres, and Almeria, also Alleros, in Portugal. An alarming increase was reported on 'July 21st in the villages around Madrid, and 42 new cbbob und seven deaths were reported on the same day at Saragossa. Up to July 27th the largest number of eases occured there, and at that date the disease was raging. The troops stationed at Saragossa, were supplied with, guitars to keep up their spirits, and music of their instruments could be heard day and night. The storms that have occurred lately appear to have an adverse effect upon the epidemic. In some places distressing scenes were witnessed. Many bodies lie uninterred, the majority of the inhabitants having fled, and the remainder are incapable of attending to the sick. The disease remained inert at Madrid, but had spread to the provinces, where several cases were reported. The returns on July 29tb,from all but fire disinfected districts, place the number of new cases on the previous day at 242, and deaths at 919. At the village of Montoridge, 100 miles north of Madrid, 210 deaths occurred in eight days and 300 remained ill, out of a population of 8000. The greatestconsternation was caused by this extraordinary death rate, which was more severe than in any previous case during the epidemic. Even the highest village officials were forced to bury their dead. A succession of violent storms during the four days ended 29th July had duplicated tfhe mortality in th 6 neighborhood of Madrid, and raised the ratio of deaths 33 per cent. A dispatch from the city of the same date says—" The epidemic had reached the French portion, and that one-fouvth of the inhabitants of Montenegro, in Aoria, had died during the past ten days. The survivors fled with the exception of the gendarmes, who remained to bury the bodies of the victims. Government will at once convoke a State Council to demand further cholera credits. Donations for the afflicted districts are flowing in from all parts of Italy." Tho latest despatch from Madrid, dated July 30th, says the number of new cases of cholera throughout Spain on Tuesday was 2316, and deaths 855 ; on the 29th 3168 cases and 1252 deaths, News from Paris of July 30th states cholera is not increasing in the poor quartars of the city, but it is making its way into the streets of the better quarters of the capital, whioh have been hitherto exempt. On the Ist July cholera was developing largely iu Marseilles, Lyons, and elsewhere in the South of France.
