A WORD FOR MR GOODEY.
TO THE EDITOE. Sie, —Will you allow me a small space in your columns to say that I perfectly agree with what Mr Goosey said in his letter of the 11th of August in connection with the Benevolent Society, in the way it deals with the working class instead of presenting their case to the proper quarters—namely, the Government. Only think, Mr Editor, of women selling the rings off their fingers to buy bread for their child rmi ; and of children kept way from the public school because they have no shoes to wear, their fathers being out of employment for more than four months! No wonder Mr Goodey speaks strongly, All honor to the man who so fearlessly does so. We were promised prosperity, and that the distress would pass away like the morning dew. But, alas ! the working class know, to their sorrow, it is not so. Just look at the state of things now. The Benevolent Society has scarcely any funds to help anyone—as Mr Goodey told them at the first they could not cope with the distress—and it will get worse in the future, as science and machinery advance. If the people are not settled on the land at a cheap rental, and have the use rf machinery, it will be far worse in time to come. This is a good country, and there is plenty of room for thousands of our fellow-countrymen if the curse were removed far away. A. H. Temuka, August 17th, 1885.
