ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London. Aug. 11. Arrived—Malaura, ship, from Napier (left May Bth), She carrier! 6297 carcasses frozen mutton, shipped by Messrs Nelson Brothers, Refrigerating machinery worked well during voyage ; meat' in good condition. The Royal Commission appointed to consider the present trade depression includes Lord Dunraven and Messrs P. A. Muntz, L. Storey and A. Connor, M.P.’s. A number of prominent Liberals, including the Hon. G, J, Goschen and the Don. G. J. ShawLefevre, declined appointment on the Commission. The Homeward Australian mails, dated Melbourne, June 80th, per P, and O. R.M.iS. Indus, were delivered here tr-day via Brindisi. The shipment of 9240 carcases of frozen mutton per Invercargill from Lyttelton were examined to-day, and found to be in good condition. It is announced that the British forces in India will shortly be increased by reinforcements of six thousand men. Aug. 12, The result of the WellingtnnManawatu Railway Company’s loan, tenders for which weie to be opened on the 7th inst., has not been made public. The Right Hon. W, H. Smith, Secretary of State for War, stated in the House of Commons last night it was the intention of Government to relieve from duty forthwith those members of the reserve forces that were recently called out, who were married. It was further announced that the remainder would be shortly permitted to return to their homos. It is announced that Generw-'-Lrin! Wolseley has been created a Viscount, for services in Egypt. The death is announced of the Right Hon. Richard Monckton Milnes, first baron Houghton, aged 76, Messrs W. W. Tickle and ’Co., merchants and Australian agents, have become bankrupt, wi'.h liabilities amounting to £38,000. Their assets amount to £12,0(,0. In the House of Loids Lord Salisbury moved a vote of thanks to the Australian Contingent for their services in the Soudan. In bis speech he eulogised the gallantry, discipline, zeal and good conduct displayed by the men. Lord Carrington, in seconding the motion, proudly referred to the patriotic zeal which' had inspired the men to offer their services. The Duke of Cambridge also spoke in high terms of the Contingent. In the House of Commons, in moving a similar vote, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach said the expedition to tiro Srudan won hi bo rendered ever memorable by the presence of the Con tingent. The motions were carried amidst enthusiasm. Aug, 13. In both Houses of Parliament last night votes of thanks were unanimously passed to the British forces engaged in the Egyptian campaign for their services. In the House of Lords the principal speeches were made by the Marquis of Salisbury, the Duke of Cambridge, tbe Earl of Huntington, and Lord Carrington ; and in the blouse of Commons by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, all of whom landed the gallantry of the New South Wales Contingent, and asserted that the loyalty shown by the British colonies was adding new strength to the Empire. The departure of Lord Carrington, the new Governor of New South Wales, has been definitely fixed for December 80th. It is stated that Major Chernside is under orders to proceed to Massowah to act in conjunction with the Abyssinian forces in taking steps to relieve Kassala. Vienna, Aug. 12, Sir Henry Drummond Wolff arrived here to-day, en route for Constantinople. Berlin, Aug.’l2. Count Kilnoky, Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs, is at' present Narzin on a visit to Prince Bismarcl£T Madrid, Aug. 12. San Francisco, Aug. 10. The Pacific Mail Company’s Zealandia with the Homeward New Zealand mails, dated Auckland, July 21st, arrived here to-day. Tknerifpe, Aug. 9. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s, Aorangi from Lyttelton, July Bth, left hero last evening for Plymouth. The New Zealand Shipping Company are in receipt of a cablegram from London, dated 12ill instant, advising arrival of Norman McLeod, from Timaru (sailed 21st May). AUSTRALIAN CABLE. T Sydney, Aug. 13. Mr D. O’Brien’s horse Trenton was backed last nig t to win 111 teen thousand pounds at fifty to one. The Messagenes Maritimes s.s. Oceanic arrived here to-day from Sydney and was immediately ordered into quarantine, the authorities refusing to give her a hill of health. Adelaide, Aug. 12. The drought has at length broken, up, and rain has fallen in many parts of the colony, More is required, however, and the new season’s wheat crop is expected to be only light, owing to the lateness of the rainfall.
