TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.
A man named Geo. Cutter met with a fatal accident in a quarry at Mount Somers on Monday afternoon. With several others, he was engaged in undermining a large piece of rock, when it fell, and completely buried him. Several hundred tons fell on the deceased. His companions escaped. He was 47 years of age, was a widower and had two children. His mother resides on the Ferry Road, Christchurch, The Town Hall at Palmerston North was totally destroyed by fire at 11.15 last Tuesday night. The Public Library, Borough Council Chambers and Road Board Offices, in the same building, were also destroyed. The Road Board safe was removed, but has not yet been opened. The Council safe passed through the fire, and on being opened the contents were found uninjured. With the exception of a few papers and maps belonging to the Council nothing was saved, Walton’s drapery store and the Bank of New Zealand adjoiuing had a narrow escape. Fortunately the night was calm. Insur-ances—-Hall, £I,OOO in New Zealand ; Library, £IOO in same office. The Auckland Timber Company have declared a dividend of 10 per cent, and carried forward £24,701.
