The New Zealand Shipping Company deny their alleged antagonism to the ’Frisco service, and the Secretary has tele* graphed to this effect, and adds to his letter to the Chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce that the Company’* Directors fully approve of continuing the ’Frisco service. Jas. Dunn lias been committed for bar.clary at Auckland. W. R. Reeves addressed a public meeting at Auckland on lis scheme for cooperation of land, labor- and capital, on Monday evening. John O'Callaghan, aged 25 years, was thrown from his horse while riding over the tussocks, near Cambrians. He died a few hours afterwards. The fifty-mile walking match between Hancock and Scott came off at Dunedin on Monday, and was won by Hancock. It started at three o’clock, and in the first mile Hancock gained a lead of one lap. This position remained unaltered for the remainder of the distance. Scott spurted several times, but Hancock was dde to respond. The time was 8 hour* 8 minutes. Mrs Bailey, of Parnell (Auckland), accidentally poisoned herself by 'aking carbolic acid by mistake while under the influence of liquor. ■ A direct line of sailing vessels between Hamburg and Auckland has been established. The first vessel, the Levuka, of 636 -tons, left Hamburg on July 15th, with an assorted cargo of Austrian and German goods- - The vessels for the present are to return Imme by way of the Islands, loading with copra. An analysis of the soup taken by an old man aud woman named Scaramelli (Wellington), after which they showed signs of poisoning, showed that the soup contained a large quantity of arsenio| Joseph and Titinia Moore, son-in law and daughter of the Scaramelli’s, were served with an information charging them with attempted, murder,'and on being brought up on Tuesday were remanded till sth August.
