HUNTING.

On Wednesday morning last the South Canterbury Harriers, from Timarn, by invitation from the Geraldine Beagle Chib, had a meet on the Raukapnka Estate through the kindness of Mr R. H. Postleth waite. The weather was all that could be desired. The field was a large one, over 70 following, including many visitors from Timarn. Several ladies wore present, and followed hounds in fine stylo. At 11 o’clock a start was made for the trysting ground, in one of the paddocks at Stover. On reaching there a draw was made, and resulted in a quick find. A fter a short spin a check occurred. Several hares got up, and hounds were whipped off. Another cast was made, and with good result. After a good burst of twenty minutes puss was run to earth. After this there were several fine runs, and puss again had to succumb. Hares being very numerous, interfered much with the day’s sport. The huntsman, Watson, had a nasty cropper, and got a bad wound on the back part of his head and one of his ribs fractured. This accident caused much regret among the field. He rides well to hounds, and evidantly understands his duties. Mr John Rutherford, the worthy master, is to be congratulated on his splendid pack. There were 14 couple, and as clean and even a lot as could be wished for, and the beauties looked grand and in good fettle. The party were very hospitably invited to a splendid luncheon by Mr and Mrs Postleth waite at the close of the day’s sport.
