In the House of Commons to-night the Right Hon, W. H. Smith, Secretary of Slate for the War Department, brought down a motion foi Supplementary Estimates. In the course of his speech, Mr Smith informed the House that military preparations were being continued pending a definite settlement with Russia on the Afghan boundary question. Lord Wolseley arrived here to-day from Egypt. F'ivc leading city financiers have signed a strong protest against the excessive borrowing of New South Wales, as over a million of the last loan was unplaced. Mr Geo. Simpson has started for Pertii, to arrange with the Government of Western Australia for a land grant in aid of the proposed railway between Banbury and Beverley, on the Albany route.

The House of Commons last night voted the Supplementary credit asked for by the Government, The Right Hon. Minister for War, Mr W. Smith, said it was needed to complete necessary preparations pending a settlement with Russia. Mr Smith added that the present Government were not prepared to accede to the demands made by Russia to their predecessors in office. The Right Hon, Robert Bourke informed the House that so far no arrangement hal been completed for arbitration between England and Russia on the Afghan frontier question, but that the state of the case put forward was still under discussion between the two countries. The mails ex Pemnsular and Oriental s.s. Clyde, (dated Melbourne, June 2ndj, were delivered to-day via Brindisi. The Government intend to erect the Gordon monument in Trafalgar Square, Lord Mayor Fowler has been created a baronet. Lord Wolseley, on his return from the Soudan, met with a most enthusiastic reception. The Times, in an article on the proposed New South Wales loan, considers it unwise to borrow at present, but is of opinion that the attempt at “ bullying ” by financiers should be resisted. The leading dealers in Stocks denounce the protest made by the brokers. The annual cricket match, Eton v. Cahors, have decided to cite the captain and mate of the vessel to show cause why their certificates should not be cancelled or suspended, The condemned man Frank Johns has been ordered to be executed, His Excellency declining to grant a commutation of his sentence. July 14, The case of the convict Johns, who was sentenced to death for the murder of a lellow causing considerable and last night crowds of people paraded ths streets protesting against his execution. It has been almost.conclusively proved that Kerry, who for some time has he-n actively engaged in forming a syndicate for the purpose of prospecting and winking certain reputed goldfields in New Guinea on the strength of some fine specimens which were claimed to have been discovered by him while a member of the Age New Guinea ixp>ditioii, is identical with a person named Lord who purchased several quartz specimens vu Launceston in February last. His story of the discovery of an auriferous country in New Guinea is consequently discredited, and the expedition which waa about to start under the auspices of the syndicate has been entirely abandoned.
