A case of suicide occurred in Wellington last Thursday night, A young woman named Alice Barnaby, aged 22, engaged as a domestic servant in a restaurant in the town, in the afternoon purchased at a chemist’s a box cf “ Rough on Rats,” and swallowed two doses. Medical aid was summoned, and she was brought round about nine o’clock. Subsequently, however, she commenced to sink, and died at three o’clock on Friday morning. No cause has been assigned for the deed. John Mackeliar, telegraph lineman at Clyde (Otago), is believed to have been drowned in the river Clutba. He v'as traced to the river bank at Doctor’s point and his horse was found on the other side.

that the women remained there from choice. Several Christchurch firms were also fined for breaches of the Employment of Females Act.

JBuchanan has been remanded from Auckland to Otahulm on a charge of burglary at the Otabuhu railway station. He served for a number of years in the police force, and was formerly clerk to the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Ashburton.
