GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. In the Legislative Council on Friday, The Lochl Bills Committee and Public Petitions Committees were appointed. On the motion of the Hon. Col. Brett it was resolved that the Papers re the Hospital enquiry at Christcharch should be laid on the table.

The Council adjourned forhalf-an-hour for the presentation of the Address in Beply. On resuming, The Municipal Corporations Bill was considered in Committee, and progress was reported, and several Bills received from the Lower House were read a first time..

The Hon. the Colonial Secretary moved the second reading of the Disqualification Amendment Bill. He said it was necessary to appoint a commandant of the military forces during the recent war scare and Col. Whiteraore was selected. It was not proposed to nuke the appointment permanent.—The Hon. Mr Scotland moved the adjournment of the dote, the subject being an important one, and this was carried on a division.

The Criminals Bill was read a second time, and the Council adjourned.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. In the House on Friday, Beplying to MrO'Callaghtn, who asked whether the Go*ernmrnt intended this session to submit any proposals to the House for the establishment of an agricultural department, the Hon. Mr Stout said it was. not proposed this session to increase the number of departments. Replying to Sir George Grey, who enquired if the Government had received any petition from the inhabitants of Fiji praying for annexation to New Zealand, the Hon. Mr Stout said the Government had received some correspondence on the subject, which he laid on the table. He believed a petition was in course of preparation at Fiji. Replying to Mr Dareaville, the Hon. Mr Stout said copies of Bills which it was proposed to introduce affecting local bodies would be sent to those bodies this session.

Replying to a question, tbe Hod. Mr Stout said members would be supplied with copies of Bills introduced daring the session, and they could forward them to Parliamentary Unions if they chose. , A number of Bills were read a first and second time, and the House adjourned..
