GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of this Board was held on Wednesday evening. Members present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairmun), J. Mundell, J. Huffey, R. Taylor, N. Dualop, and W. S. Maslin. Mr C. E. Sherratt, the Clerk and Surveyor, was in attendance. THE BALANCE-SHEHT. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting was to receive and discuss the balance-sheet for the past year. He then read the clause in the Act referring to it. It was proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Mundell, and carried—" That the balance-sheet as duly audited, the abstract of reservss be duly received." It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Huffey seconded by Mr Mundell—" That the balance-sheet and detailed statement of accounts be published in the local papers, one insertion in each paper." FINANCIAL. The Chairman said that according to a resolution passed at a meeting of the Board some time ago tbey were bound to deposit their funds in the Baok of New Zealand. The Chairman further reported on behalf of the Finance Committee that they had placed £IOOO on fixed deposit for 12 months in three sums of £SOO, £4OO and £IOO at 5 per cent. PETITION. A requisition was read, signed by Mr Wm. Young and a number of others, asking the Board to open Wilson street, from High street to the South Town Belt, so aH to give a shorter road to the township to persons coming over the downs from the direction of Pleasant Valley, especially on market days with stock, etc.—After some discussion it was decided that the Works Committee and Overseer go over the road and give an estimate of the probable cost of opening the same. The opening of this street would also give access to a large number of unoccupied town sections, which are bound to be taken up some day. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered : For the purchase and removal of dead timber in the Raukapuka Bush reserve— J. Huffey, mixed wood 3s per cord, black pine 5s per cord, stakes 8s per hundred, and posts £1 per hundred; J. T. Ward, mixed wood 2s, black pine 8s 6d, stakes 8s '9d, posts £ll2s ;F. Dierck, mixed wood Is 3d, black pine Bs, stakes 10s, posts, £1 103. The last tender stipulated that 10s per cord should be deducted for the 10 cords to be delivered to the Board. The specifications of the contract stated that 5 cords were to be delivered free of cost at the Town Board Office and 5 cords at the Ranger's house. As Mr Dierck's tender was not in accordance with this part of the specifications it was set aside as informal.—Mr Dunlop proposed, and Mr Taylor seconded— J " That the tender of Mr J. T. Ward be accepted, conditionally upon his paying a deposit of £5, and payment for wood to be made before any is removed.—This was carried, and on the motion of Mr Maslin, seconded by Mr Mundell, it was resolved that Mr Huffey's tender be accepted on the same conditions in the event of Mr Ward not complying with them, Erection of picket fence-The only tender for the erection of a picket fence in front of the Town Board's Offices, was that of A. White for £8 18s, which was accepted on the motion of Messrs Dunlop and Mundell. ' INSURANCE. A discussion took place on the amount the new office should be insured for, and it was finally decided to insure the office for £175, the shed for £2O, and the stock with a floating policy of £3O, the whole to be insured in the South British office. VOLUNTEER RIFLE RANGE. The Chairman, on behalf of the Geraldine Rifle Volunteers requested that leave be granted to the corps to shoot_ over several sections in order to get a suitable length of rifle range of Crown Lands. The Commissioner had reserved a portion of land in tLe gully behind the domain fer the purpose of a range, and also gave permission to shoot over the sections lower down subject to the approval of the Town Board, as the reserve ground was not of sufficient length, being only some 350 yards. Mr Maslin said it would be against the Town Board By-Laws and Police Regulations to shoot in the Town District. He would be very glad, however, to see the Volunteers get a good range, Mr Taylor did not think tha Board could give leave to the Volunteers to shoot over the streets.

The Chairman thought that if permission was given by the Government to shoot over sections and unformed streets, the Town Board could not interfere. As all the other members were of opinion that it would not be desirable to have the range where proposed, he would drop the matter. He had simply been asked to bring it forward, Mr Maslin said it should not be put iiside without some resolution being passed. After some further discussion MrTdjbr moved—" That the Board are of opinion it is not desirable to allow tiring over atreetß in the Town District, the name being contrary to the By-Laws." Seconded by Mr Mundell and carried. This being all the business the Board adjourned to the 3rd June.
