GERALDINE TOWN BOARD IMPROVEMENTS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Would you kindly allow me space in the columns of jour widely-circulating journal to offer a suggestion or two to (lid Geraldine Town- Board. It has been their policy, I believe, in carrying out the scheme of improving the roadways and footpaths of the township, to spend their money in places where the pvblic will be most benefited by the expenditure. In regard to asphalting the footpaths the Board are willing to lay it down where the occupier or owner of the property will pay half the coat. This means, of course, that where the ow»er refuses to contribute his half, or where property is unoccupied, that portion of the footpath will be left as it is at present and the township will assume something of the appearance of patchwork. What I would suggest is that the Board should asphalt the paths half the width, say the outer half in these places. It would of course, be too much expense to asphalt the long main footbpath through the town, but this might be done by degrees. I would again suggest that a start be made say from the Bank of New Zealand corner to the Post Office or Church, and the same on the opposite side of the street, say as far as the Literary Institute corner. I have not mentioned the footpaths between the Geraldine Hotel and Messrs Tasker and Co.’s shop, and the parallel path (on which latter asphalt is now being put down) because I trust the owners of property on that portion ot the street will not stand in their own light and refuse to contribute the small outlay necessary to improve the entrance to their places of business. I have made the suggestion in regard to the footpaths from the Bank to the Institute corner without stipulating that occupiers of property abutting on that portion of the street should be willing to have it done the whole width of the path. Probably, most will, and, if so, so much the better, I should like to see the Board at its meeting next week consider these suggestions, which, if carried out would prove of great benefit to everyone going backward and forward from the rarious places of business in that part of the township. Apologising for taking up so much of your valuable space.—l am, etc., Pro Bono Publico. Geraldine, May Ist, 1895. ,
