The Company, judging from the bill*, is a strong one, and provide a good ontertainment, composed of short comedies and vocal and instrumental music. A ball will tike place after the performanoe.

The New Impounding Acx.--The ratepayers in the Levels Road District are not satisfied with the fees charged under the new impounding Act, and on Tuesday, at the Leveli 3oad Board meeting, a petition was read from a number of them requesting the Board to revert to the *o!d rates. Anomalies op the Law;—Two men, who told a painted f par row on the pretence that it was a canarj, have baen sent to prison by the Lord Mayor of London for three months' hard labor. Two women who were given the charge of three children, and who were proved to bare starved and ill-treated them, and reduced them to a frightful state of emaciation, have bean sentenced at the Middlesex Sessions to one week's imprisonment, and three months' hard labor, respectively. "It is evident," says Mr Labouchere, " that in the eyes of the law it is more wicked to paint a sparrow and Be 11 it as a canury [tbau to kill three children." We wonder what tbey would have got if the men had painted a pig.

Sale or Leasehold Land.—We w-ould remind our readers that to-morrow Mr W. Kitson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, will submit to public auction, at the R.M. Courthouse, Temuka, the lease for seven years of 11a. 2r, land adjoining the Arowhenua cemetery, and known as the Market Place. The iipset annual rental is 10s per acre, and the purchaser will have to pay, on the fall cf the hammer, one year's rent in advance. Fires.—A combine and elevator (new last season) were burned at Makikihi on Monday night. They were the property of Mr W. Quinn (of Makikihi), and were insured for £250, but the loss is estimated to be over that amount. Mr J. Poff at the same fire lost about 150 bushels of wheat, in stack, which were uninsured. —Five stacks of grain near Waikouaiti, valued at £2OO, were burnt down on Tuesday. They were uninsured. —iHCendiarism is suspected in both cases. Failing to Provide.—Robert Proctor, a Timaru Borough Councillor, was charged last Tuesday, in Timaru, with having failed to provide for his wife, who is an inmate of a lunatic asylum. In the course of the evidence it leaked out that Proctor had another woman living with him as his wife, that he had sold Lis property, and that he was about leaving the Qolony. Mr Perry, who appeared for him, raised the point that the case ought to have been heard in Christchurch, and that, therefore, the Timaru Magistrate had no jurisdiction. This proved a fatal objection, and the case had to be dismissed without prejudice. Prmbntatiok.—On Tuesday afternoon last Mr John Gobdalh the late Engineer to the Timaru Harbor Board, was presented with a piece of plate and a purse of sovereigns, subscribed by a number of his friends and well-wishers in South Canterbury. Mr Moody, the Chairman of the | Timaru Harbour Board, made the presentation, and spoke very highly of Mr Goodall. In bis reply acknowledging the honor done him, Mr Qoodull said he would have the pleasure of seeing those present again, as he was going to make regular visits to Timaru to look after the Harbor Works. From this it may be gathered that he has decided to accept the position of Consulting Engineer oh the terms offered by the Timaru . Harbor Board at their last meeting. Temuka Todng Men's Club.— A most enjoyable social evening was spent in the Young Men's Club room on Monday, 24th inst., being the re-opening of the I Club for the winter session, Mr O'Hal- ' loran, Vice-President, was voted to the chair, and gave a short address, after which readings, etc., were given by the young men. The most noticeable feature of the evening was a debate between Messrs Russell and Mogridge, entitled " Are the Government of New Zealand justified in calling out the Militia in the present crisis, and is the Militia system advisable in New Zealand V Mr Rnssell taking the affirmative and Mr Mogridge the negative. The arguments were ably put and well sustained, showing careful thought and no mean ability. The subject was most interesting (coming as it does at the present moment) at times tin meeting getting very excited as tho different sides upheld their opinions, altogether a most successful evening was spent. After a hearty vote to the Chairman the meeting adjourned until Monday next, when most interesting business is to be brought up. Football.—A. committee meeting of the Temuka Football Club was held last Tuesday evening. Various letters were . read, amongst which was one from Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst stating that he thought it would be better for one residing in town to act on the committee instead of himself, and also that he would present the Club with a bali. It was unanimously resolved that Mr Hayhurst be asked to allow his name to be kept on the Committee. The members could not see their way clear to carry out the suggestions given at the general meeting re joining Canterbury Rugby Union. . It was found after considerable discussion that no other Club in South Canterbury as yet belongs to the Onion, and that a South Canterbury Rugby Union is likely to be formed, therefore it was thought advisable to wait before taking further steps. Mr G. Smith, of Winchester, waited on the Club for the purpose of bringing forward the amalgamation of the two Clubs. It was proposed and carried unanimously that the two Clubs be amalgamated on these conditions:—" (1) That all the funds and property of the Winchester Club be handed over to the Committee of the Temuka Club; (2) that Winchestar be represented on the Committee by two members ; and (3) that all present members of the Winchester Club be admitted as members of the Temuka Club without any further subscription." A match will be played next Saturday in the Park between the "dark and fair" members of the Club. After the match a general meeting will be held to decide what the colors of the Club should be.—The opening game among the football players in Geraldine will take place in the Domain on Saturday next. About a dozen persons have given in their names as members of the Club for this season, and when once the game is started there will doubtless ba a good addition made to this number in a very short time. A nominal fee has been fixed for membership, and all who intend to join are requested to leave their names with the Hod. Secretary, Mr||A Erekine, ,

A Good Collbotioit.—The Boman Catholics of Ashburton aro making great efforts to reduce the debt existing on their Church. The offertorieg lait Sundaj amounted to no leas than £4OO, and it it expected (according to the Press) to collect a further sum of £7OO during the next few weeks. Prisbytkrian Church, Gbraldine.— It has been tho custom in former years to hold the annual parish gathering in connection with the aboTe church, on the Queen's Birthday. This year, however, the Queen's Birthday falls on a Sunday and the holiday will be kept up on the Monday, on which day the annnal gathering will be held this year. As formerly, the Oddfellows' Hall will be utilised for the occasion. The success which has always attended this gathering has made it a very popular event among not only tho members of the Presbyterian Church but many others, %nd as hitherto no pains will be spared in the carrying out of ths arrangements. Welcome Retreat Lodge, Geraldine. —The usual weekly meeting of this Lodge was held in the Temperance Hall, on Monday evening. Bro. J. Brown, W.0.T., opened the lodge in duo form, and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. One member applied for a clearance card which was granted. It was resolved that an open lodge be held in a fortnight's time and a committee was appointed to get up a programme for that night's entertainment. This being all the business, the Lodge was closed at 9.30 p.m. in the usual form by the W.C.T., Bro. J. Brown. Skill in thf Workshop.—To do good work the mechanic must have good health. If long hours of confinement in close rooms have enfeebled bis hands or dimmed bis sight let him at once, and before some orgaiic , trouble appears, take plenty of Dr Soule's Hop Bitters. His system will be rejuvenated, his nerves strengthened, his eight becoming clear, and the whole constitution be built up to a higher working condition. Bead advt.
