Dissoldtion or Partnership. —lt is announced in our advertising columns that Messrs Knud Sando and James Sanderson, agents and brokers, trading under the style of “ Sando, Sanderson and Co,” have dissolved partnership, Mr Sanderson continues the business, with the exception of the Lite Assurance Agency, which will bo carried on by Mr Sando. Mr Sanderson receives all debts duo to, and discharges all liabilities of, the late firm. School Treat, —Mr Jesse Davis, superintendent of the Gapes’ Valley Sunday School, drove his scholars over to: the Geraldine bush on Saturday to enjoy a day’s outing. The rendezvous was a spot in the bush above the Roman Catholic Church. Games of all sorts were indulged in, and of course there was a plentiful supply of edibles. To judge by the lively tone of the youthful party on their return journey, they must have thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Acceptance of the Qbe amine Yolunteee Rifle Costs. —The Committee of the proposed Rifle corps having written to the Hon. W. Rolleston asking him to assist in

getting the services of the corps accepted, have now received a letter from the hon. gentleman, who states that the Defence Minister, the Hon. Mr Ballanoe, has informed him “he will have pleasure in accepting the services of the proposed Geraldine volunteer corps.” The application for acceptance was forwarded last week bv Mr W. M. Moore, and, as the Defence Minister is now in Canterbury, an answer to the application should be to hand in a very ehort time. The letter received on Saturday from Mr Rolleston caused much pleasure and not a little excitement among the Volunteers, many haviag become doubtful that their services would be accepted, as others had been refused. New Zealand Militia. —Constable Morton has been busy for the last few ‘ day* taking down the names of persons to serve as militiamen. He is taking down the names of all men between the ages of 17 and 30, and has got a long list of them, but what is to be done next has not transpired. Constable Willoughby has been similarly engaged in the Geraldine district. Some excitement has been caused among a few, who imagined the enrolling of the militia meant a call to arms at once. We hope, notwithstanding the strained relations between England and Russia, that their services will not bo called inti requisition, but at the same time there are, we trust, not many who would not be willing to take up arms to protect their adopted country.

Accidents. —Two small accidents occurred at Geraldine on Friday last. Two sons of Mr G. W. Westropp, of'Orari Bridge School, were out shooting together, and whilst one of them was handing the gnn to his brother it accidentally went off. The charge struck the lad on the side of his left foot, tearing the boot away and also a portion of the foot. The injury is not very serious, and the sufferer is progressing favorably.—On the same day a son of Mr Thos. Godwin had one of bis feet run over by a dray wheel, and on examination it was found that the large toe was so badly injured that at first it was thought amputation would be necessary. The doctor entertains hopes, however, of saving the injured member.—Mr Jas. Turner, who, was injured by the bursting of a lemonade bottle on Monday last is progressing favorably, though very weak from loss of blood. A piece of glass struck him in the throat, severing one of the small arteries. R.M. Court, TKiiuri.— At the above Court, jesteday, before S. D. Barker Esq. # J.P., Thomas Powell was charged with having made use of obscene language, and also with assaulting the police. It appeared that Powell was coming up the street on Saturday night in company wiih his wife when Constable Guerin passed by him. As the Constable was passing Powell asked “ Who are you looking at you ?’ The constable told him to go home, but as he was in plain clothes, Powell thought he was some private individual, and hit him a blow with his fist in the face. The constable then arrested him, and he was in the lock-up till 12 yesterday, when ho appeared before the Court. Mr Aspinall appeared for him and pleaded guilty to the charge of assault but denied the charge of obscene language.— After the evidence had been heard, he submitted that the charge of obscene language had not been proved, but his Worship held ii was. Henry Williams was next called as a witness to Powell’s character. He said he had known him for nine years and never knew anything wrong of him. Mr Aspinall then addressed the Court, urgingthat this was accused’s first offence, and asked the Bench to deal leniently with him. His Worship said the evident intention of the Act was to put down obscene language. He would make the sentence as light as he cnuld, For the obscene language the accused would be imprisoned for one week, and for assaulting the police he, would be fined 20s. Mr Aspinall urged that the penalty was altogether too severe* It was the man’s first offence, be had borne a good character, and this ought to be taken into consideration. His Wor. ship said he bad no reason for altering bis decision. Obscene language would have to be put down. The Court-then adjourned.

Eotai FiiOtrßiNo Mitts Company.—A meeting of the shareholders in this Companj took place last Saturday, Mr MoQlashan occupy ihg the chair. After the reading of the minutes, the Chairman said that the mseting had been convened for the purpose of considering the following resolutions (1) "That any shareholder holding in his own right shares to the value of £SO, shall be eligible for election as a Director, and that the Articles of Association be altered accordingly and (2) “ That the number of Directors be increased to ten.” On Mr Balfour inquiring why the report submitted at last meeting was nob to be considered, the Chairman said " the Directors could not approve of it a* .a whole, and., therefore could not adopt it. The Directors could nob adopt whatever the shareholders liked to recommend. After a few more remarks to a similar effect, the Chairman declined to hear Mr Balfour any further, when Mr E. A. Barker said he understood the whole of the report was to be considered. The Chairman said it was not so, only the two resolutions named could be considered, and after a few more remarks of an acrimonious nature, the motions were put and lost. The Chairman, at the request of Mr Balfour, kept his seat whilst that gentleman read the following requisition, which was signed by a large number of shareholders : "We, the undersigned share’ holders, request the Directors of the Eoyal Flouring Mills to call a meeting of shareholders, to be held on April 25tb, to consider the following resolutions : —(1) ‘That Mr Bruce be appointed Working Manager of the

mill, and arrangements be made with the Directors accordingly(2) ‘ That Mr Bruce be allowed £BOO in paid-up shares in consideration of his claim for bonus and goodwill (3) that immediate steps be taken to appoint a thoroughly qualified Commercial Manager of the business with charge of the office, grain-buying, and full control of the mill, subject to the Directors’ authority.' Kemp* tfaorne, Prosser and Co., Agents, Christ* churoh. 1 Mr John Lawson, Poundkesper and Ranger for the Temuka district, notifies the impounding of a steer from Rhodes' Island. Mobaii Tubpittjdh.— Blame attaches to a jury of intelligent men when they condemn a man for crime whose moral nature has been perverted by indigestion, diseased liver and kidneys. A thoughtful judge may well consider whether society would not be b ettwf served by ordering a bottle of American Go/a Hop Bitters for the unfortunate in the dock instead of years of penal servitude.
