THE EARTHQUAKES IN SPAIN.
The following brief particulars respecting the damage done by the earthquakes in Spain is taken from a late English paper In the province of Granada five hundred and twenty-six were killed ; io the province of Malaga one hundred lost their lives, and many were injured. Alhama, a small town in the province of Granada, was nearly destroyed, and over three hundred and fifty bodies have already been extracted from the ruins. In Periana, in the same province, seven hundred and fifty houses and several churches, were destroyed, and about sixty bodies have been found. The Spanish Government has granted s sum of £IOO3 out of the National Calamity Fund for the relief of the inhabitants of the towns in the Province of Granada who have suffered from the earthquake. It has since been reported from Madrid that the earthquake completely destroyed Santa Cruz da Alhama, where thirteen bodies have already been disinterred from the ruins. Fifty persons were killed at Zafanaya, 100 at Albunuelas, and 300 it Alhama. At Canillas, Otivar, Murchas, and Priego da Cordoba, many persons have lost their lives. The number of fatal casualties in Andalusia is estimated at over 1009, The King has sent 4000 dollars for the relief of the sufferers. Fresh shocks of earthquake, the papers of Thursday state, have been experienced in Malaga and Granada, accompanied by further loss of life and destruction of property. Two thousand persons are now believed to be killed by the earthquakes. The Government Commissioners who have been sent to the afflicted districts report that there are many bodies still unburied; that the peasantry are stiP houseless and panic stricken, and that in some small towns a hopeless state of confusion prevails.
