PROPOSED VOLUNTEER CORPS FOR GERALDINE.

A meeting was held in the Young Men’s Club, Geraldine, on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of taking steps to form a corps of Volunteers. Mr Geo. Ward was voted to the chair, and, after reading the advertisement calling the meeting, asked those present to make any suggestions or propositions. He thought a corps of volunteers a thing much required, and he had no doubt that if once started it would be a success.

Mr Fisher said he had written to Capt. Temple and Major Young, but had received no reply from either of them. He had expected that the latter would have been present and have explained to them the proper steps to take. In reply to Mr -T. Sherratt, the Chairman said they had not got a copy of the Volunteers Act.

The Chairman said a few years ago he had interested himself in an attempt to raise a corps and succeeded in getting over 50 names of those willing to join. He had then got Mr Postlelhwaite to ask the late Colonel Packe whether the Government would provide them with arms and ammunition, but the Government had refused to do so because all arms available were wanted for the Armed Constabulary in the North Island. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr N. Sims, to write to the Hon. W. Rolleston for information, and to Major Young, and write to the latter inviting him to be present at the next meeting.

It was resolved that Mr A. Fisher should undertake the duty of writing to these gentlemen, and he consented to do so.

Mr A. Fisher (hen proposed that the meeting stand adjourned till next Tuesday night at the same time and place.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.

[A letter was lying at the Post Office on Tuesday night from Major Young, stating that, owing to the short notice given him, he was unable to attend that evening, but he would be glad to attend any subsequent meeting.]
