NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.

The fifteenth session of the Senate of the University of New Zealand was opened on Wednesday morning in the Government House, Auckland, which had been kindly lent for the purpose. There were present—Dr Hector, vice-Chancellor, in the chair, Professors Von Haast (of Canterbury, Shand (of Otago), Brown (of Auckland), and Macsrregor and Sale (of Otago), Bight Rev. Wood (of Wellington), Rev. Dr Salmon and Rev. Roseby (of Otago), Hon. Dr Grace (of Wellington), Sir G. M. O’Rorke and Rev. Bruce (of Auckland), Rev. J. 0. Andrews (of Nelson), and Mr F. Fitchett (of Otago). Mr W. M. Masked read the vice-Chan-cellor’s report of the proceedings of the Senate for the past twelve months, which opened with a reference to the death of Chancellor Hon. H. J. Tancied, and suggested it might perhaps be the wish of the Senate to place on record an acknowledgement of the great services he had rendered the Senate. The report went on to say, after reference had been made to various subjects, that the income of the Senate was £3BBO, of which £l4ll was spent in examinations, and £1252 upon scholarships. For November examination of 1884, candidates came up as follow For B.A. degree, 87; for other degrees, 19 ; total, 106 ; an increase of 21 as compared with 1888. Of these 13 were candidates for the medical preliminary examination. The vice-Chan-cellor said he had been authorised by Sir Julius Vogel to inform the Senate that the Government bad under consideration a scheme for granting four annual scholarships, each to be held for a period of eight years, for the benefit of students following the scientific side of the University course. Those scholarships would be open so far as the scheme had yet been arranged for competition by pupils from any school in the colony who were able to pass a standard similar to the 4lh Stmdard at primary schools. A select Committee was appointed to consider the reports on the matriculation junior scholarship. The Senate of the University resumed its sittings on Thursday. Dr Hector was appointed Chancellor, and the Rev. Andrew Nelson vice-Chancellor, The University Scholarship Examinations report recommended that the junior scholarships be awarded to the following in order of merit; —William F. Ward, Robert Speight, and Aimee Mills, Christchurch ; Percy G. Morgan, Dunedin ; Fred. Gibbs, Nelson ; Flora M. Albin, Dunedin ; Catherine Lamb, Christchurch ; John H, Smith, Dunedin. Out of thirteen candidates taking the whole or part of the medical preliminary examination, five, whose names are on the table, are allowed to pass. Of the 37 candidates for junior scholarships all are considered qualified for matriculation examination. The following Timaru Students passed the recent ipatripplation examination J. Faircloch, F. Bone, E. Coster, C, Hard, H. McLean, 0. Plante, J. Cook, E. Cooper, and J. Cramond. The following candidates for scholarships have qualified for matriculation : -Wellington —J. Marshall, W. Colbeck, W. Morrah, A. Henley, H. Harding, 0. Morpeth, A. McCredie, H. Brandon, G. Pringle, and F. Glasgow ; Nelson—M. JUchmopd, F, James, and —Jones Christchurch—J. Turner, E. Webb, W. Hargreaves, A. Cox, R. Cook, J, H, Smith, A. Kirk, M. Sword, and J, Cresswell j Dunedin—J. Mcßaundress, M, Fergusson, J, Moss, J, Duncan, J. Crump, K. Walker, The following have passed in whole or in part the preliminary medical examination ; Wellington—J. C. Smith • Nelson—W. Holder ; Christchurch—W. Buteraen ; Ashburton—E. Fooks ; Dunedin—o. A. Copeland.
