ROBBERY AT THE ORARI RAILWAY STATION.
An impudent robbery was committed on Thursday afternoon at the Orari ailway station. Aboat half-past 3 Mr May, stationmaster, told the porter, O’C bhnor, that he was going to sit doym till the arrival of the next train, as be was pnwell. O’Connor was in the office doing some work* and Mr May sat down with his back to the door. O’Connor went out, and soon after Mr May heard someone at ‘the money drawer, but did not look round, as he thought it was O’Connor. Some people came ip, and Mr May had occasion to go to the drawer for change and found it empty. Before the rotbery there was in the till a £5 note, a £1 note and some silver. He at once went and told the porter, who procured a horse and in pursuit of a young fellow he had seen abojit f,he station shortly
before. He caught up to two youths on the north side of the Orari river, who, when they saw him, threw down their swags and hid in the flax, He caught one of the lads, who gave his name as George Wilson, and he said it was his mate who took the money. After a while O’Connor also found his mate, whose name is George Carroll. He acknowledged having taken the money from the station, and further said Wilson told him not to do it. On being taken hack to the Orari station, Carroll gave up £7 6s, and on being asked if he had any more he gave up 11s 6d. A quantity of railway tickets were also stolen, but these were afterwards recovered. Information was given to the police at Geraldine, and Constable Willoughby went over and brought the accused to Geraldine. They were brought up before the Rev. G. Barclay, J.P., yesterday, and remanded till Monday. The youths appear to 'ho between 17 and 18 years of age. Wilson is a portmanteau-maker by trade, and has recently been working in Dunedin, and was on his way up from Oamaru. Carroll is a baker, and was travelling in company with Wilson. They had walked up from Oamaru to save railway fares.
