CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.
The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the ]Blh inst :
A better feeling has been manifested in the grain market for the pist week. Buyers being more disposed to operate, 1 several large lines of oats and grass seed having changed hands at fairly remunerative prices. Should the warm weather lately prevailing continue a few weeks longer much greater activity may be anticipated, and, we trust, bettor prices obtained. A few lines of new season’s wheat have been placed- Jit 2s fid per bushel at country stations, while the quality so far has been satisfactory. Old wheats command former rates—viz., 2s lOd to 3s for Tuscan, and 3s to 3s 2d for pearl and Hunter’s, f.o.b. Now onts are coming forward freely, and for immediate shipment Is lOd per bushel, f.0.b., Ins been obtained. This price, however, can hardly be expected to continue, the opinion of buyers being that lower rates are inevitable. Old oats are worth 21 per bushel more. Samples of barley have been shown, but it is rather early to quote, (he grain being scarcely sufficiently matured for trade purposes. Ryegrass is meeting with considerable attention ; the quality generally is good, but much that is coming forward is in such an unclean condition that low figures are the rule, viz., 2s Ci to 2s 9d, f.0.b., although machine-dressed heavy seed could be readily placed at from 3s fid to 3r 9d, f.o.b. Quotations for cocksfoot are not yet difinitely fixed, the heavy stocks in the London market causing buyers to be shy of offering more than 3d per lb, f.o.b. We have heard, however, of some parcels being placed at that price on the ground. Dairy produce is not eagerly sought after, and values have slightly receded. \ Butter nominally 7d f.0.b., and cheese 4d.
