The Chairman said that was the reason he thought it desirabla to pay the money to Mr Mackay and get a guarantee from him. The Overseer said the Maoris had closed the road. The Clerk said young Tommy had leased the land to Martin Connolly and got the rent. Undevtliese circumstances Connolly could give the road. The Chairman said there would be no harm in writing to the Native Commissioner asking him if be would guarantee that the road would be kept open. This suggestion was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr P. Wareing stating that the mill cresk was overflowing on his land, and asking it to be looked to at once.— The matter was discussed in committee, after which it was resolved —“ That in reply to Mr Wareing, in view of the continued trouble about this matter, the Board will take all the water down the canal drain that can be so taken. In the mattei of the mill drain itself the Board are of opinion that this is a matter not calling for interference on their part as no damage is apparently being dona to any public road.” With regard to the other drains which Mr Wareing offered to clear out, the matter was deferred till next Board day. From Mr R. Lavery, asking that hia name be taken off the roll for 40 acres of land at Milford, it being now in possession of Mr Hayhurst.—The Clerk was ordered to make enquiries. Kelland, asking the Board to improve the ford over the Hae-hne-te-moana river. There was a deep gutter which would be difficult to pass in the grain season. The Overseer was instructed to inspect the ford and make any necessary improvements. From Mr W. Boyd, stating he had leased Education reserve 959 near Mr Badham’s, and asking for timber to build a culvert to enable him to get to his land. —The request was granted. From Mr R. S. Smith, with reference to the road through Dinda farm, and complaining that Mr Nicholson was taking the law into his own hands in reference to it. —The Chairman said Mr Nicholson was clearly laboring under a mistake. He could not do anything he liked with the road. The Board could, if they choose, proceed against Mr Nicholson, but it was not desirable to do so.—Nothing was done in the matter. A letter was read from Mr C. Griffiths, nominating Mr Gregg for (he Orari Board of Conservators.—The question was adjourned until next meeting. The Chairman said Mr J. Cain had asked him for timber for a culvert, but, on it appearing that it had nothing to do with the roads, the clerk was instructed to reply that the application was refused. drain pipes. The Overseer submitted a plan for making concrete pipes to take the place of culverts, and it having been found that it would be much cheaper than "Jo buy them, he was authorised to make some as soon as he found a necessity for them. INTERVIEW. Mr Dunn interviewed the Board in reference to a contract he had completed. He had taken the contract at per chain and got paid £8 10s, whereas the amofint due to him was £9 13s. The late Overseer had made a mistake in measuring the work.—The Overseer said he had seen the work, but could not measure it as it had been done too long since. He had heard Mr Sinclair saying to Mr Dunn that he had made a mistake in measuring the work, and would set it right before he left. Ho did not, however, do so.—After Mr Dunn had retired the Board decided to pay the amount of his claim. Mr R. S. Smith waited upon the Board to ask permission to erect swing gates on the road through Dinda farm until he got permission from the owners to erect a fence along the road. After some con versation the Board decided to grant permission to erect gates for the next six months on condition that the usual notice should be given, and that the gates should be 15 feet wide. THE TEMUKA POUND, The Chairman drew attention to the newimpounding Act, and said that it would be necessary to take certain steps with regard to it.—On the motion of Mr Barker, seconded by Mr Smith, it was resolved—“ That the Chairman take the necessary steps under the new Impounding Act io give effect effect thereto. The arrangement with the present poundkeeper to remain in force until 30th of June next, it being the half-yearly term ; the appointment to be then open for competition.” oversper’s report. The Overseeor’a report was read as follows : “ Counihan has finished his contract (bridge on Waitohi road) with the exception of a few more loads of earth to the approaches. There is only one contract now on hand, viz., forming a footpath in Main South Road. During the month I have had several small jobs done satisfactorily by day work. Part of Toner’s road requires raising, and as I have some drays working on Parke’s road 1 propose to do this work at once. Malarky’a drain requires cleaning out, and several large drains aie getting foul, but I intend that they shall stand over until after harvest. 1 am getting some timber from the Opihi,

1 bridge which will do as well for private crossings, etc., as new material. I wish to ask the Board if they intend to raise the day wages during harvest. I have inspected the mill creek and also waited on Mr Dickinson. He is quite willing to •lean out the mill drain and also to keep the mill creek free from watercress from his mill to where the creek runs alongside the road. From this point to where the Board’s drain empties into the creek lie declines to clean. This part is covered with watercress, and would cost about per chain to clear. The water in the mill drain is backed up, and in heavy rain it would overflow in places on to Mr Wareing’s land. This is caused partly by the watercress in the mill creek, but the main cause is the mill Idatn. —Protective Works at Waihi.—l have inspected this place in company with Mr Inwood, and arn of opinion there is not nuffi lent danger at present to the Board’s prope 'y to justify any expenditure in proteefye, works,” The Overseer was .authorised to. carry out the work on Toner’s road, 'and ' the Board decided to increase the daj - men’s wages during harvest, but that n.o more work should be done than wtijf absolutely necessary. The Board then adjourned.
