WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
Cairo, Jan, 28. Sir H. Stewart has been ra'sed to the rank of Major-General. General Earle telegraphs that it is doubtful whether any fighting will occur before the column reaches Berber. He reports that the uncles of Su ieman, by whose orders Colonel Stewart and party were murdered, have submitted to him. Later telegrams have been received here reporting that the Arabs made an attack upon Genetal Earle's column, but were repulsed by the cavalry later on. Subsequently they attacked the rebels, and forced them to retreat to Berti. London, Jan. 28. El Metemneh was attacked by the British on the 21st. The British lost nine men and then withdrew. Sir Charles Wilson has bombarded Shally. Captain Viscount St. Vincent, who was wounded at the battle of Abuklea Wells, has died from his wounds, Meri Pasha, who has arrived at Gobat from Khartoum, has arranged to proceed with Lord Wolseley to General Gordon. During the engagement near Tl Metemneh the enemy was never nearer the British troops than thirty yards. Seven thousand of the rebels took part in the engagement. They lost thirteen hundred killed and wounded. The English loss was twenty killed and sixty wounded, Jan. 30. The Madhi has been strongly reinforce i, and is still in the neiglibi rbood of Metemneh. Colonel Stewart, who was so severely wounded at the recent engagement at El Metemneh, is recovering.
