TERRIBLE RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
Sydney, Jan. 26. A terrible accident occurred to the mail train last night near Cootamundra, on the southern line. Owing to heavy rain a bridge fifty yards wide and nire deepgave way,and the train went into the gap and fairly dammed the creek, and several persons wore washed down the stream, Others were killed by the force of the concussion. Several miraculous escapes are reported to have occurred. The scene was one of intense horror. Several bodies have been recovered, viz.:—Crawford, a railway employee ; Willow, ditto ; Odwayer, the mail guard ; Campessby, a railway official, and a woman and two children whose names are unknown. Numbers ot others suffered more or less severe injuries. Jan. 27. Several of the sufferers by the railway accident have been removed to Goulboura, whilst others remain at Coolamundra. One of the injured, named Berjin, is not expected to recover. The wreck of the scene presents a terrible scene. An inquest has been opened on the bodies of those killed, but it has been adjourned. The Albury correspondent of the Argus telegraphs that the railway catastrophe at Cootamundra has left SO persons unaccounted for.
