RIFLE MATCH.

A private match between the South Canterbury Rifle Club and the Temuka Rifles commenced on the Temuka range at 9 o’clock yesterday. Rain was falling in torrents and a strong wind was blowing at the time, and of course interfered with the shooting. So unfavorable was the weather that before the first range was completed it was mutually agreed to postpone the match. So far as they went, however, the scores stood Temuka 99, Timaru 107, but it appears there was some mistake made in the marking owing to the inclement state of the weather. The Timaru team shot with the Deeley-Edge Mettoid rifle, which is altogether superior to the Snider rifle used by the local men. There is on the Deeley-Edge rifle a wind guage which can bo adjusted to suit any weather. The ball it carries is smaller and offers less resistance to the wind and it has many other advantages, especially in bad weather. In the afternoon the weather cleared and five of the Timaru men having remained in Temuka it was agreed that they should fire a match with five of the local team. Tho following is the result. — TIMABU RIFLE CLUB.

The conditions were five shots at each range. The proper match has been postponed indefinitely. The arms of the Timaru team are infinitely superior to those of the local men, and a proposition is under consideration to the effect that both teams should exchange arms and fire another match.
