Mundell and Co. report 1 sales for the week ending Saturday, 10th January, 1884 : The live stock market, especially for forward store cattle, has received special attention during the week, and prices in consequence have slightly improved. On Monday, Jan. sth, we held a clearing sale on Mr Andrew Reid’s farm, of his dairy cows and store cattle. There was a good attendance of buyers, and the following prices were realised for the lots sold : Dairy cows, in full profit and springing, £3 17s 6d to £8 10s; three-year-old steers, in store condition, £4 2s 6d. At the Geraldine yards on Wednesday we yarded 723 sheep, 140 head of cattle, 69 pigs, and 10 horses. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Horses—At their yards to-day an entry of 45 horses was received for sale, comprising a few good draughts ; the balance ordinary hacks. The demand was quiet for most of the lots, only some 15 head having been sold at the following prices : —Up to £24 for good draughts, and from £lO to £ls for hacks, etc. Sheep—Prices for store sheep are barely maintained, and owners wishing to sell have to submit to a reduction in rates ruling about a month ago. A good number have been offered for sale during the week at the different yards. Crossbred hoggets, in which the principal business is at present doing, they quote at from Us to 12s. They have a considerable enquiry for young halfbred ewes. Fat sheep are also somewhat easier to purchase, the supply being at present in excess of the demand, and a prospect of better prices for the next few months cannot be expected in the face of the great abundance of feed. At Winchester last Thursday they sold a small line of prime fat crossbreds at 13s Bd. Cattle—They have an enquiry for young stores, and also for well grown cattle. At Studholme Junction on Monday they placed 22 head mixed cattle at from £2*103 to £3. At Winchester on Thursday they placed steers at £3 7s 6d ; cows up to £5 15s. Fat Cattle—On Monday, at Studliolme Junction, they sold a small line of steers, light weights, J at £6 15s per head.
