WAITOHI FLAT SCHOOL.
The annual treat given to the children attending the Waitohi Flat School took place in the school grounds on Tuesday, December 30th. With the exception of a few passing showers of rain, the day was all that could he desired, and at an early hour the children began to congregate about the school, all apparently with one object in view ; to enjoy themselves. The Chairman and Committee must be congratulated for the great interest they took in providing suitable: amusement for the children, and the unqualified success which attended their efforts. At about 12.30 p.m. the sports—consisting of running, jumping, etc.—commenced. At two o’clock the children, with a goodly number of their parents, adjourned to the school, where lunch had been spread and after doing ample justice to the good things provided they again proceeded to the play-ground, where they indulged in sports till 4.30 p.m., when they retired to the schoolroom to receive the reward of their year’s work. This year the Committee gave two special prizes, to be awarded to the most popular and best conducted boy and girl in the school, the recipients to be decided upon by the vote of the children themselves. The result of the ballot showed that George and Annie Scott were considered to be the most popular, and accordingly to them the prizes were awarded. The needlework was judged by Mrs John Talbot and Miss C. Cunningham, with the following result:—StandardsY. and Yl.—Annie Scott Ist, and Grace M. Anderson, 2nd. Standard IY.—Mary Halley Ist; K Anderson, 2nd ; and Mary McGlintock, 3rd. Standard 111. —C. Johnson, Ist; F. Walker, 2nd ;I. Scolt, 3rd, Standard 11, Maud Streeter, Ist ; Agnes McGlintock, 2nd. Standard I.—Mary McCabe, Ist; Isabella Fraser, 2nd; and Annie Walker, 3rd, Infants A, -Jane Currie, Ist ; Maria Cone, 2nd. Infants B.—Lucy Talbot, Ist ; E. McGlintock, 2nd ; C, Gibbs, 3rd. Mra’john Talbot having distributed the prizes, the Chairman expressed the great pleasure it gave him to see such interest taken in the sewing this year, and hoped that the interest which had been awakened would continue to increase. Mrs Talbot then distributed the school prizes. The following is the prize list; —Standard YI. — Grace May Anderson, Ist ; Standard Y, —Francis Anderson, Ist; Anne Scott, 2nd, Standard IY.—Sarah McGlintock, Ist; A. Moore and Elizabeth Anderson, 2nd ; Mary McGlintock, 3rd. Standard 111. James Orr, Ist; Thomas Orr, 2nd ; J. Scott, 3rd. Standard ll.—Agnes McCliutock, Ist; David Anderson, 2nd ; Thomas Pearce and Maud Streeter, 3rd. Standard I.~Annie Walker and Annie Halley, Ist; George Johnson, 2nd ; Annie Thornley, 3rd. Cards and toys were then presented to all those who bad not received prizes. The room was then cleared, tho tables respread, and the children and parents again took tea. Tho master then called upon the children to give tlreo cheers for Mr and Mrs Talbot and the Committee, who had spared neither pains nor money to make the treat a grand success.
