LOCAL AND GENERAL.

New Year’s Eve. —On Wednesday evening next a special service will be held in Sfc. Saviour’s Church, Temuka, commencing at 1L o’clock. Geraldine Town Board. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board;will beheld in their office at half past seven on Wednesday evening. R.M. Court, Temuka. Daniel Speno* was brought up before S. D. Barker, Esq., J.P., at the above Court yesterday, charged .with stealing a tweed hat of the value of 4s 6d, and on the application of the police he was remanded. There were two othejt charges against him : one for stealing a blanket and towel, and another for stealing a towel. . • Oua Hospitals and Charitable Institutions. — The Hon. Mr Buckley, having completed his inspection of the Hospitals, charitable instutions, and asylums in Otago and Southland, left f®r the North on Saturday morning. He arrived in Timaru on Saturday evening, and, after having visited the Hospital and other places, left by special train on Sunday for Christchurch. Slaughter-House Licenses. —Holders of slaughter-house licenses in the Geraldine County are reminded that the same expire with the year 1884, and new licenses must be taken out by the Ist January 1885, otherwise they will be liable to certain penalties. The County Council also notifies that it is imperative that the Weekly Return Forms provided by the Council should be used. Train Arrangements.—The special attention of those intending to travel by train on New Year’s Day is directed to the announcement in another column to the effect that the first train from Timaru to Christchurch on that day will leave earlier than usual. It will depart from Timaru at 7.10 a.ra., passing the Washdyke at 7.22, Temuka at 7.47, Winchester at 8 Orari at 8.12, Eangitata at 8.28, and Ashburton at 9.42, reaching Christchurch at 12.16 p.m. On the Ist and 2nd January, 1885, the evening train from Timaru to Ashburton will leave Timaru at 5.30, and run 55 minutes later than usual to destination. There will be no goods traffic on the Ist January. The Saltation Army.— The soldiers attending the Salvation Army Congress at Christchurch during the first three days represented 26 corps, the bands present numbered 7, the soldiers present numbered about 900, and the officers 50. On Friday evening Maim; Howard, who is at the head of the gathering, made a general statement of the work dune by the Army during the past 7 years throughout the world. From it it appeared that m 1877 there were 25 corps and 35 officers, whilst in 1883 there were 900 corps and 2300 officers, the work being carried on in fourteen languages, while the War Cry vvas printed in six languages, and had a circulation of fully half a million. 15,000 meetings arc held per week.

Muir dell and Co. hold their monthly sale of 'stock etc., at their yards, Geraldine, on the 7th January, and are, now booking entries. • Masonic,—The regular meeting of thi Lodge Southern Star, No. 619, S.O.,Geraldine, will be held on January 29th, aad not oh Thursday next, the ■ Ist January, the regular meeting night. Important Clearing Sale.—On Monday next;'the sth January, at the Homestead of Mr A, Reid, near Geraldine, Messrs J. Mundell and Co. will hold a most important clearing'-sale of dairy cows, store cattle,, horses of all kinds, waggon, waggonette, road scoop, &0., &o; The sale will begin at 12 o’clock and luncheon will be provided. Full particulars will be -found in our advertising columns. The Dog Tax fob 1885.—1 n our advertising columns will be found a list of those persons authorised to receive the dog tax in the County of Geraldine (other than in. Town Distripts and Boroughs) for the year 1885. The receiver appointed for Geraldine is Mr Wm. Coltman, for Mount Peel Mr F. Newmman, for Temuka Mr John Lawson, j. and for Pleasant Point Mr I. L Mor’rris, * Judging by what has - recently transpired at our local police courts it would be wise, and in thetoud profitable, for owners of dogs to register them early. The Temuka Railway Station.—For the last couple of daye carpenters have been employed in building additions to the Temuka rail way station, but notwithstanding the' ■ representation, of men. being unemployed here thC work has not been given to local -, men. This does not appear fair. ; When the Goverment knew several carpenters were idle here they ought to have given; them the. work. i. ■ | Primitive Methodist Sunday School,Geraldine. The children attending this school were given their annual treat in the Domain on Boxing Day, A profession was formed at the Church, and the children marched 1 to the ground, headed by the band. The usual amusements were freely l indulged in till rain set lin, which greatly marred the day’e pleasure and kept away a great many who would otherwise have attended. Tea was handed ■' | ; round to the children, and before! dispersing they were addressed by the Rev. Mr Clark, thsir minister. The band played vonous selections during the day. Painful Accident at Geraldine.—The - many friends of Mr Frederick Tish will regret to learn that an accident of a somewhat painful nature happened to him on Friday at the Primitive Methodist picnic in the Domain. Some persons at either end of a skipping rope were endeavouring to entrap a knot of spectators, and the rope catfbing Mr Fish unawares , from behind he wai thrown heavily backwards, breaking the email bone . of his left am just below the elbow and dislocating the elbow joint. No amount of . censure will repair the misehie£ r done, but for a warning in the future we must say that the game which was the cause of the accident was a most foolish and dangerous one, and the sooner it is discontinued the better. Large Native Meeting;.—The first of a number of native feasts which are to be held on the coast under the direction of the re- ’ ’ nowned Titokowarn, is now taking place at Taporabenua, a kianga a short distance out of Hawera. Natives are present from all parts. On Saturday fully a thousand arrived in one body from kiangas north of the Waingongoro as far up as Waitara and the White Cliffs. To provide the feast, rents have been obtained where possible months in advance, and the credit of all those whose credit is negotiable has been pledged to the utmost. Men and women have been industriously preparing food, and five or six carcases of beef,Tots of skin poultry, heaps of . potatoes and whares full of bread, butter, cakes, biscuits, jam rolls and so forth, afford a promise of a good time coming.
