ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST’S SUNDAY SCHOOL, WINCHESTER.

The yearly treat in connection with this Sunday School took place (In conjunction with the Day School) on Boxing Day at the “ Gums,” near Winchester, a retired and sheltered spot on the banks of the Waihi River. Swings had been erected for the children, and other amusements were provided. At an early hour the whole of the children in the district marched from the school to the grounds with banners flying, led by Mr Smith, the Sunday School Superintendent, and Mr Cooke, the Teacher of the Winchester School. These gentlemen were conspicuous in their untiring efforts to amuse the children, and were ably seconded by the Sunday School Teachers, the Members of the School Committee, and other ladies and gentleman. Nearly the whole of Winchester turned out to take part in this yearly gathering, and in endeavoring to please the children gained a pleasant and happy day’s enjoyment for themselves also. Dinner was amply provided for on the grounds, and full justice done it by old and young. Rain threatening, an adjournment was made to the school for tea. Tea was followed by the great event of the day, viz., the distribution of Day School and Sunday School prizes. The former task was ably performed by Mr George Taylor, Chairman of the School Committee, who urged upon the children the advantages accruing from a sound education, and the necessity of embracing every opportunity thus afforded them of obtaining a liberal education. Mr Cooke, the recently appointed Master, hoped that the children would attend regularly, for without regularity they could not hope to make much progress. Hearty cheers were given for the late Teachers, the Chairman, etc. The Sunday School prizes were then awarded by 'the Rev. T. A. Hamilton, Incumbent of the Parish. Before presenting the books he apologised for not having been with them earlier in the day, but was prevented through indisposition. He congratulated Mr Robert Smith upon lhe high state of efficiency into which be had brought the Sunday School, the Teachers upon their energy and diligence, and he also thanked the parents for their hearty co-operation in seeing their children attended the school, thus showing their appreciation of the work carried on by the teachers. After the class prizes and prizes for attendance were distributed, four special prizes were given by the Incumbent to the four who had distinguished themselves most in an open examination on the Bible, Prayer Book, and Catechism, These were gained by (1) John Wilks and (2) Edmund Ensor ; (1) Sarah Lewis and (2) Lilly Shallard; The'lncumbent then said—lt is a coincidence that the Sunday School rewards should follow the Day School. You gain knowledge in the Day School, and we give you wisdom to use that knowledge in the Sunday School. It is as if the Day School rigged you out ns a full .rigged ship, with masts, spars, sails, and everything complete for the voyage of life, but the Sunday School 1 ships the rudder ’ which turneth the ship whithersoever the governor listeth. Knowledge without moral aud religious principles to guide it would be useless and moreover dangerous.” He then asked all to show their thankfulness to God that the day had passed without mishap or accident by joining with him in singing the doxology. This was heartily Responded to by all present, and the proceedings terminated. Appended is the Sunday School prize
