N.Z. METROPOLITAN MEETING,
These races commenced at Christcburch on Tuesday, the weather being wet and cold. A meeting of the Stewards was held at Dine o'clock to take into consideration the advisability of postponing the meeting, but it was decided to proceed. The attendance was fair. We are obliged to limit our report of the races to the results :
The Hurdle Race Handicap, of 100 sovs, with a sweepstake of 5 sovs. each, to o-o to the second horse ; minimum weight, 9st; over six flights of hurdles; once round and a distance. Mr D. O'Brien's b h Borderman, aged, lOstlllb (O'Connor) 1 Mr D. Rutherford's ch g The Lad, aged, list 121 b (Sheenan) 2 The Free Handicap, a sweepstakes of 3 sovs. each, with 200 sovs added ; one mile, Mr J. Pilbrow's b g Mata, oged, 6at 61b (White) 1 Mr P. Martin's ch f Pearl, 3yrs, 7st (Hickey) 2 The New Zealand Cur, a handicap sweepstakes of 20 sovs. each, with 1000 sovs. added. Second horse to receive 200 sovs. the third horse 100 sovs., from the stake ; two miles. (Closed with 70 subs.) Hon. W. Robinson's brh Vanguard, by Traducer—En Avant, syrs, Bst 91bs (Derritt) 1 Captain W. Russell's ch m Leonora, by Leolinus—Gossip, syrs, Bst (London nelly) 2 Welcome Stakes, a sweepstakes of 15 sovs. each, with 250 sovs. added ; for two-year-olds ; colts Bst 51b, fillies Bst ; the second horse tD receive 50 hovs. and the third 15 sovs. from the stake ; four furlongs. (Closed with 40 subs.) Mr Clifford's ch c Stoneyhurst, Bst 51b (Brown) 1 Mr F. Cotton's b h Hermitage, Bst 51b (Clifford) 2 Riccarton Welter Handicap, of 100 povb, with a sweepstakes of 3 sova. to go to second horse ; six furlongs. Mr J. Pilbrow's b Mata, aged, Bat 1 Mr H. Goodman's b g Billy, 6yrs, 9st 81b ... ... ..• (Owner) 2 Scratch Selling Race, of 20 sovs ; winner to be sold for 30 sovs ; catch weights ; six furlongs. Mr H. Goodman's Ploughboy (White) 1 During the day, Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin worked the totalisators with their usual ability, and passed £8649 through the three machines, The dividends were small.
