LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL,
In the Legislative Council on Friday, a number ot Bi'ls were considered in com-
miite. In ieply to the Hon. Mr Nurse, the Hon. Mr Reynolds said the propriety of endeavoring to procure from the Admiralty some old ships or brigs for the purpose of training vessels would he taken into consideration by the Government. The motion that the papers relating to the case of Mr E. ff. Wxrd be presented was negatived. The Hokitika Reserve Bid was read a third time and passed. The Colonial Secretary moved the second reading of the Mortgages Release Extension Bill, which was carried. The Affirmation in Lien of Oaths Bill was reported and passed.
HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES. In the House of Representatives on Friday, Replying to Mr Slaward. the Hon. Mr Stout said the police would give all assistance to the local bodies in enforcing the penal clauses provided by the Dog Registration Act.
Replying to Mr Dargaville, the Hon.Mr Stout said the Government would consider during the recess the defences of the principal seaport towns in the colony, but they would not pledge themselves as to what further action misht be taken.
Replying to Mr Steward, the Hon. Mr Stout said the Government was aware of an extensive brown coal deposit close to the Waimate Branch R-dlway. As soon as Dr. Hector could nfford to spare an assistant the value of this deposit would be reported upon.
Replying to other questions, it w»s stated that railway sidings were dangerou* to the travelling public and that was why one had been refused ; that stepß would be taken to obtain a complete Hansard record from 1854 ; that the Government would take steps to keep down the rabbit pest on Crown Lands, and that the Government would assist as far as possible in developing products for which the North Island is adapted, but regarding which the inhabitants are ig'ioraDt.
Sir Julius Vogel moved the second reading of the East and West Coast, the Middle Island, and Nelson Railway Bill. After several of the memherxhad spoken the debate was adjourned till Monday. The Gisborne Harbor Board Bill was read a third time and passed. A number of Bills were read a secoud time.
Mr Holmes moved the second reading of the Cbristchurch Marker, Reserves Bill. The i3i!l was opposed by Messrs Rolloston, Reese, a:.d Montgomery, an.l on the motion being put it was lost by 19 to 16. The Dunediii Drill Shed Reserve Act 1876 'Amendment Bill, Tamanga School Site Bill, and Kowai Domain Board Empowering Bill passed through Committee, were read a third time and passed,
