A half-caste named William Smith has been committed for trial at Ngarawahia (Auckland) on a charge of indecent assault on a pirl seven years of age. McKay, the Manager of the Rev. J. C. Andrews’s lea Station, Masterton, was fined in the minimum penalty of £237, at Wellington on Monday mornina - , for breach of the Sheep Act. Notice of appeal was given. David Alexander Evans, or Hopkins, which is said to be his real name, and who recently attempted suicide by cutting his throat at Durand’s boarding-house, Wyndham Street, Auckland, died on Tuesday night at the Hospital of his injuries. At the Police Court, Timaru, on Tuesday last, a man named Yelland was charged by the Timaru poundkeeper, W. Butterworth, with illegally taking a goat, which the latter had impounded, out of the pound on the 10th inst. The oftence was practically admitted, the defence being that the goat was tied up with such a short piece of rone that it could not get its fore feet to the ground. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate fined the defendant £5 and costs, the minimum penalty. The libel case Russell v. McMinn and McKelvie, claim £IOOO is now on at Wanganui. Plaintiff is a J.P , and was editor of the Manawatn Times, while defendants are proprietor and n, li ur 1 respectively, of the Manawatn Standard. The libel alleged is that plaintiff made an indecent proposal to Louise Crawford (an actress), and a Native woman. Miss Crawford stated in evidence that he had attended supper with this actresses, and after that, when going home, she found the door locked, and he made the proposals. Constable Gillespie gave evidence that he had made enquiries as to the rumors, but did not take any steps, and plaintiff hearing of the enquiries, took steps to have him shifted, and he was consequently transferred to Feilding.
