CRHISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.
Tlie Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 19th inst:—
Since reporting last week little change has taken place in cereals, excepting a firm upward tendency in oats. The depressing effect of the London wheat market, and the absence of any prospects of improvement therein, although not depreciating local values to any great extent, is beginning to manifest itself in the dearth of inquiries, local millers being scarcely so eager even for first-clas samples. The stocks of damaged wheat in store are still very ? arge, and second qualities are beginning to meet with more attention for picked lots, the quality having in many instances improved, while any that was tending to decay has run its course in that direction, and is simply an encumbrance to holders. Barley may still be fairly well placed, if of prime quality, at fair rates. Grass seed readily commands sale at current prices, the market being the same as last week. The quotations for potatoes continue to progress in an upward direction, so much as that little business can be effected on account of the sanguine tone held by growers.
