AUCTIONEER’S REPORT. TEMT7EA. Mr K. F. Gray reports for the week ending Friday, 19th September On Saturday last he offered for sale Mrs Ellen Leask's property, containing 25 acres, situate fronting on the Milford road (lately occupied by Mr Edwin Pilbrow), but as the price offered was not up to owners expectations it was passed in at £26 per acre. On Monday, 15th inst., be held his usual monthly sale. There was a large attendance, 130 head of cattle, and 70 pigs were yarded, on account of Messrs Andrew Grant, James Austin, T. R. Crompton, Robert Matthews, J, Hayburst, D. Inwood, J. Demuth, A. M. Allan, T. Hobbs, and others. He sold a pen of good fat steers and heifers at £6 10s ; 10 at £7 ; 5 at £6 15s ; 2at £6. There was no demand for store cattle and almost all the lots were passed in, A line of 15 calves were sold for los 6d. Pigs —There were a good many buyers present, and consequently good prices were obtained, as follows; —20 at 50s ; 6 at 47s ; 14 at 43s ; 4at 43s , 26 at 33s ; 12 stores (young) at 14s. The fat pigs averaged 5d per lb. There is a fair demand for good fresh ewes and he could place several lines.

On Tuesday he held a clearing sale of household furniture and effects on account of Mr Peter Sinclair who is leaving the district. For the prices that were realised for the goods, and the attendance of the public, it was the best furniture sale he has had for some time. Mr Sinclair’s roan mare found a purchaser at £l3, the buggy at £ls 10s, and the harness at £5 15s —a really cheap lot. DUNEDIN MARKETS. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday a large supply of fat cattle forward — viz., 220 head, the greater part of which were prime beef. Although competition was not over brisk, most of the trade being out of cattle the whole found buyers. Prices were hardly equal to last week’s, except for a few extra prime pens, which brought a shade over. Best bullocks sold at from £lO 10s to £l2 2s 6d ; others, £6 5s to £9 ; cows, £4 7s 6d to £lO. Qnotatations for prime beef, 22s 6d to 25s per 1001 b. Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) sold on account of the proprietors Seadown Estate, 44 prime heifers at from £7 15s to £9 10s.

Fat Sheep—Only 1242 were penned, including 419 merinos. Prices were very irregular. Mr,Donald Stronach reports : The market was barely supplied te-day, only 1242 being penned, of winch 419 were merinos, the balance crossbreds, nearly all of medium quality. The number was inadequate for the trade’s requirements. Sales were easily effected at an advance of 2s to 2s 6d on crossbreds, and from 3s to 3s fid on merinos, as compared with last week. Best crossbreds brought 17s fid to 19s; others, 14s fid to 16s; merinos, 14s fid to 16s, We quote crossbred mutton at 3£d, and merino 3Jd to 3fd. Fat Lambs—None forward.

Pigs—432 forward —an unusually large number, but consisting chiefly of stores and porkers. Although the bidding was scarcely so brisk, considering the number they sold well. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report bacon pigs and prime porkers in good request at 35s to 87s 6d ; others, 8s to 17s fid. Store Cattle and Sheep—Mr Donald Stronach reports :No transactions during the week.

Sheepskins— Mr Donald Stronach reports ; At our usual weekly sale on Monday we offered an extensive catalogue, chiefly butchers’ green skins. There was a large attendance, and competition was fairly brisk. We obtained up to last week’s figure for crossbreds, but merinos were lower. There was a good deal of irregularity in the prices realised. Butchers’ green crossbreds brought from 4s 9d to 5s fid ; do merino, 4s to 4s 9d ; lambskins, fid ; country dry skins, 2s to 4s fid.

Hides—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. report: There is very little alteration to report either as regards demand or values. We have cleared all to hand at from to 4£d per lb. The latter price is obtainable for heavy, properly-trimmed ox-hides.

Tallow—Mr Donald Stronach reports ; Holders of medium-sized lots tit for shipment refuse to submit to late reductions. Shippers hold aloof, consequently but little business is being done. We sold this week good to prim© at 29s ; medium, 24s 6d to 27s 6d ; inferior, 20s to 245; and rough fat at 19s to 21s per cwl. Wheat—Air Donald Stronach reports ; No alteration in regard to the position of the market this week. Inquiries continue to be made for good sound milling, but buyers show no disposition to advance on last week’s quotations. Small lots are being placed at these rates, but deliveries are small and business insignificant. We quote prime milling white velvet and Tuscan, 3s 7d to 3s 8d ; ordinary, 3s 5d to ?s 6d ; medium, 3s to 3s 3d. These prices are an improvement on those quoted a few weeks ago, but they do not in any way enhance the value of frosted or otherwise damaged, which is only fit for fowl wheat, and saleable at from Is fid to 2s Sd (bags weighed in). Oats —Air Donald Stronach reports : The market in the meantime continues firm, and for any coming forward or still remaining on hand higher prices are demanded ; but although there are numerous inquiries buyers decline to give prices asked. We quote prime milling at 2b 3d to 2s 4d ; good short feed, 2s 2d to 2s 3d ; ordinary, 2s to 2s Id (bags weighed in). Barley—Mr Donald Stronach reports ; Brewers are nearly all supplied for the season, having cleared out all to hand in malting condition. Ryegrass Seed—Mr Donald Stronach reports : There is a moderate business being done, principally in machinedressed from old pastures, at from 4s 3d to 6s fid, the latter for Poverty Bay seed ; undressed finds sale at from 2s 3d to 4s. Potatoes— Alesgrs Donald Reid and Co, report: The supplies forward having run very short, price are firmer—Bos to 85s could be obtained.—L. Alaclean reports : Potatoes in good demand at £3 18s to £4 per ton.
