ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Sept. 7. The yacht Mignonette was the property of Mr Henry Want, and was swamped by a heavy sea. The boat with the occupants, drifted about for twenty-four days with but little provisions and scarcely any water. The Montezuma, which picked up the survivors, conveyed them to Falmouth. They have been placed under arrest, and confessed that their first statement was untrue, and that they killed and ate the boy, who at the time of his death was raving. Mr Trevelyan, Chief Secretary for Ireland, addressed an immense meeting at Glasgow on the Franchise Bill. Germany has made further annexation on the West Coast of Africa, thus hemming in Walvisch Bay, recently annexed by the Cape Government. Sept, 8. The first stage of the experiments that are being conducted by the Corporation of Trinity House in regard to the best means of lighthouse illuminations are favorable to the electric light being used.
It is reported that Sir Julius Yogel is likely to succeed Sir F. D. Bell as Agent-General for New Zealand.
The Australian cricketers have each netted nearly £7OO as a result of their cricketing tour. The London season having closed, and most of the fashionable members of society being out of town, the banquet which was intended to have been given them has been abandoned, and a farewell champagne dinner will be given instead at the Oval on Saturday next.
The Cape Parliament 10 July last resolved that it was expedient to annex the territory that has just been annexed bv Germany in the vicinity ol W alvisch Bay.
Sept. 9. The homeward mails via Suez and Brindisi, dated Melbourne, July 29th, were delivered here yesterday. The survivors from the yacht Mignonette were brought up before the Police Court to-day and remanded, pending the decision of the Treasury as to the necessity for prosecuting them for the murder of the boy who was killed and eaten. Intelligence is to hand from the West Coast of Africa regarding the annexation of Lieutenant Cameron’s trading station at Bimbia by the German commission under Dr Naohtigal. It proves that the natives of the district are hostile to the Germans, and refused to give allegiance to the Imperial officers. Later. H.M.S. Opal, twelve guns, will relieve H.M.S. Espeigle, at present on the Australian station. A Canadian offers Beach £2OO as expenses if he will row Hanlan at Montreal for £IOOO a-side. An enquiry has been held into the alleged murder committed by the crew of the yacht Mignonette, and the captain admits having cut the lad’s (Pecker) jugular vein, and so caused his death. Bail has been refused, although much sympathy is felt for him. The British flag has been hoisted at several points at Calabar, on the west coast of Africa. A case of cholera has occurred at Rome. Rome, Sept. 8. King Humbert has gone on a visit to Naples to personally enquire into the measures which are being taken to prevent the spread of cholera. Nearly 400 cases of the disease broke out today in that city. St. Petersburg, Sept. 8, The Czar has been warmly received at Warsaw, and a local demonstration has been ox'ganised in honor of His Majesty’s visit to (hat city.; Brussels, Sept. 7. A renewal of anti-clerical riots occurred here, and a clerical demonstration was attacked by a mob, many persons being injured on both sides. Order was' finally restored by the police, and ,200 persons were arrested. AUSTRALIAN CABLE, Sydney, Sept. 8. Dr Moran, Roman Catholic Archbishop designate of Sydney, arrived to-
day, and-was accorded a great reception by large crowds who assembled to welcome him. Addresses weae presented, and special services held at the Cathedral. Albany, Sept. 8. Arrived, this morning-r-The P. and 0. steamship Shannon, with the inward Suez mails, dated Lor don, August Ist, Adelaide, Sept. 8, A serious outrage has been committed in the northern.territory by a tribe of blacks, who attacked a party of copper miners, killing one and wounding two dangerously. The Duke of Manchester, who is visiting the northern territory, was only twenty miles from the scene of the outrage. Sept. 9. The police are pursuing the black* in the northern territory who recently attacked a party of miners. The Duke of Manchester is still in the locality. Melbourne, Sept, 9. More cases of smallpox are reported from various place? in the country.
