TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), R. A. Barker, Quinn, Paterson and Smith. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, ARBITRATION. Mr Geo. Dyson (one of the arnitrators in the dispute between the Board and Mr F. Oldfield) attended and stated that no satisfactory arrangement had been arrived at between himself and Mr Bourne, who had been appointed by Mr F. Oldfield. — After some discussion, Mr Dyson was authorised to come to some arrangement on the question with Mr Bourne. DEPUTATIONS. Mr Dunn waited on the Board, and said that if given time he would carry out his contract on the road from Winchester to Orari. It was all underwater at present, and the work could not be done. • If given a month he would do it. If not, he would have to throw the contract up.—After some conversation it was decided to give Mr Duna to the end of the mouth. Mr A. Frew attendad, and said he thought he was over-rated for 74 acres of land, which was valued at £l9 per acre, the rate being in the £.—lt was shown that Mr Frew’s town property was included, and this was accepted as a satisfactory explanation. Mr Brown waited on the Board in reference to the road from Gass Street to Wheel band’s Road, There were six or seven chains wanted looking to. —It was decided to do the work. Mr Badham presented a petition requesting the formation of If miles of road from the South Rangitata School towards the railway station, on the North Orari Road. The road was in a disgraceful state, and it was the only outlet to the station. It was necessary to do it at once, because it could not be ploughed shortly, and if delayed would not be set by the next grain season. —It was decided to instruct the Overseer to see what was required to be done, and report thereon. Mr Badham also said the North Orari Road was formed last year, and the Board promised to shingle it as soon as it was set. He wanted to know whether the Board would shingle it now.—The Chairman promised the matter would be looked to. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr J. A. Young, complaining that the side channels in Winchester wanted cleaning out.—The Overseer was instructed to report on it. He was also instructed to look after the Winchester Footbridge. From Mr W. Hayhurst, and others living in Wilkin Street, asking that some improvements might be made in the footpath of that street from the Board’s cottages to the concrete bridge.—The Overseer .was instructed to report. From A. Yallender, and other residents in Arowhenua, asking that some improvements migbt.be made in the street leading eastward from the Catholic Church. —The Overseer said tenders were in for a part of the road that day, and tip's was deemed sufficient.
A circular from Mr J. H. Newlyn, covering a pamphlet on a cheap money scheme, was read, but no action was taken.
From Mr 0. P. McCallum, calling attention to the bad state of the road at the Smithfield crossing.—The Overseer was instructed to see Mr McCallum, and report on the matter. From Mr W. Hawke, asking for extra payment for clearing drain. —The Board decided to refer Mr Hawke to his agreement with the Surveyor. From Mr Gimpson asking for the fulfilment of the Board’s promise as regards the low port of the road in front of his shop. —The letter was read.
From Mr Gimpson, Winchester, asking for leave to erect a verandah in front of his shop ; also for 8 pipes to make a roadway into his yard and' about a chain of concrete kerbing, for which he would pay half cost. —The request re verandah was granted, but the others were refused. overseer’s reeort. To the Chairman Temuka Road Board. Sir, —I hav’e the honor to report for the month ending September 2, 1884, Contracts on hand have not made good progress during the month, owing to the wet weather, but are now being pushed on. Mr Buck’s application for a road to be formed on the South Rangitatal would recommend to he done. It would, not cost much, Mr Crocker’s application for the dam on the west side of the road to be cleaned out ought to be done for about 20. chains, as the water in some places is near the road. In reference to Mr Parke a application for pipe culverts, I would rqcammend that they be put in. The roiid at the place would require to be formed for about 10 chains as it is very wet and low. Tenders have been called for four contracts, which will be in for your consideration to-day. Mr Ollivier will be in Temuka to audit the accounts on the 11th inst, Tho Board requires a stock of 9inch and 12-inch pipes. P. Sinclair. It was decided to call for tenders for the work applied for by Messrs Buck, Parke and Crocker, and the pipes were ordered to be got.
TENDERS. The.following lenders were opened ; Contract No. 14—Shingling Talbot’s Road; M. Dunn,3-« per yard (accepted); E. Counihan, 3s B|d, No. 15 —Shingling Middle Swamp and Milford Roads ; R. Flannagan, Is 8d per yard (accepted) ;M. Dunn, Is Lewis, 2s. No, 16 Forming Footpath, Main South Road ; Thouns Cleary, £5 14s 61 (accepted) ; M. Dunn, £5 17s 6d. No. 17 Forming footpath, near Catholic Church : M. Dunn, £2 16s 6d (accepted) ; M. Flaherty, £3 9s ; R. Flannagan, £3 10s. INSPECTOR OP NUISANCES’ REPORT. Thu Inspector of Nuisances reported that the nightman at Winchester had thrown up his position, and ihat the inhabitant* were depositing the soil in their own premise*. Ho also stated that he had received notice that his services would no l onger be required. —The Chabman’s action in giving the notice was endorsed. The Bo«rd then adjourned.
