POLITICAL.

A lequisition is being got up in the Roslya district asking Mr Ross to resign. The trial of Mr Vincent Pyke, by effigy, at Tapanui, was not so successful as was anticipated, because when the Court had assembled it was discovered that the prisoner had escaped—that some wag had stolen the effigy and it could not be found. However, a new image was set up and was sentenced to he hanged and burned. Mr Pyke had telegraphed that it was impossible persons at a distance could understand the situation, that the newspaper reports were unreliable,’and that letters for publication were on the way. At a meeting of the Government party on Monday morning, the following resolution was carried : —“That an endeavor having been made, for the sake of ex--pediting public business, to bring about a coalition with the Stout-Vogel party on the basis of four being selected on either side, and this having been refused, and no terms which are reasonable or which do not involve a groat sacrifice of principle having been offered, this party do not soe their way to accept the proposal for coalition,”

The proposals of Mr Stout were that the Ministerial party should nominate three Ministers, and that Major Atkinson could take up anv portfolio with the exception of that of Premier or Treasurer.
