RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT.
Tem oka—-Monday, August 18, 1884,
[Before S. D, Barker and D. In wood, Esqs., J.P.’s.] BEGGING.
James McGrath, and Lewis Jansen were charged with begging at the house of MrHeßenzy, Winchester, on the 26ih inst.
Jansen said : Yes, we went in after a bit of bread for we were hungry. Mrs Charlotte Taylor deposed; I was at Mr Deßenzy’s during that day. Mr Ueßenzy was in Timaru. Hie accused, came to the house and asked for dinner, and I told them I was a stranger and had no power to give it. It was Jansen that spoke ; the other man never spoke, but went to the pump for water.; Jansen used bad language. He said he met Mr Ueßenzy going into Winchester. 1 told him to go to the yard ,to .se,e whether he could see him. He went a way .and did not come back again. The Court held the charge should be begging in a public place. If a man asked at a private house for some bread it was an extraordinary thing to punish him. It often happened. After some further discussion, it was decided, before giving a decision, to hear another charge against Jansen for having used abusive language. BAD LANGUAGE. : , , .... Lewis Jansen was further charged with having used profane and threatening language. •
Charlotte Taylor stated that Jansen said if he did not get food he would rip the place up. She felt alarmed, Benjamin Chiverson, a man in the employment of Mr Renzy, stated that the two men came and asked witness if ho was the boss ? Witness said he was not, and had no power to give them “tucker.” Jansen said he would rip the place up. McGrath never said a word.
The Court decided to dismiss the charge against' McGrath,’but iu the case o£ Jansen, as his ,; cohduct was very reprehensible, .he, would ...be...locked up for 24 hours.
