The first matchr between the above Clubs was played in the Park, at Temuka, on Saturday, resulting iu the home team being defeated by two tries to, nil. "Reid captained the whilst Haines acted in a similar capacity for Temuka. The game consisted of two spells of forty minutes each. Daring the first the ball was chiefly near the goal line of the Tempka men, who were forced down several times. The Blues almost secured a touch down, but through some fine'play by Roberts, it was prevented. This was followed by some very fast play, in which Clinch and Ogilvie on the one side and King and Jones on the other distinguished themselves. At length Mills secured the first touchdown for Tiraarn. The try at goal was intrusted to Jones, who failed to add to the score. Time was then canted. ■Shortly after the second spell comibenced’ Gooch secured the second try for Timaru. The try at goal was lost through Jones failing to make his mark when crossing the goal line. The ball upon being kicked out was carried well down to the Timaru goal and several times the home team forced their opponents down. The ball was kept near their goal until time was called. Ob' the whole; the. match passed off very pleasantly, all the players behaving in a most friendly spirit towards, each other. Of those who did 'good' service for Timaru we might mention the names of Messrs Reid, Haylock, Mills, Mackay and Sheehan, and for Temuka Messrs Haines, Gurr, Yelvin, Clinch, Ogilvie and Smith.
