THE TONGARIRO AT SEA.

TO THE EDITOE. Sib, —I was asksd; on leaying New Zealand, to writ* and give my experience of how I was treated on board. I have now great pleasure in doing so.v L Captain E. 0; Hallett, R.N., is the most obliging of men, and a most able, cautious, and skilful commander, I shall be on the look-out when I return for any ship that goes to New in which Captain Hallett commands. 2J I 'cannot speak too] highly of Mr J. E. Bone, the Chief Officer, and, in fact, of all the officers and men connected with the noble steamer ; a more obliging set of men could not be found. 3. As regards provision?, they were excellent; and in great abundance ; the contrast between this and other vessels I bare sailed iD was surprising. 4. The cleanliness of the Tongariro astonished me ; no smells, no vermin of any description. Captain Hallett inspected the cabins every morning and listened to any complaints, however trifling, and had them rectified at once. In case of sickness he made it a point of regularly coming to the cabin to see vif there were any extra comforts that the ship or he could supply the invalid with., 5. If the New Zealand,; Shipping Company keep up their credit in having ships like the Tongariro, and have; such an excellent captain, officers and men, and provision the steamers as they are how doing, they make the trip to £3ngland a pleasure trip, and it will be the inducement for many others to visit the , Old Country who formerly would not have risked the voyage. 6. We came through the Straits of Magellan, a grand sight, stayed 24 hours at Bio, a nice break in the voyage, then called at Madeira and reached England a little under 38' days. —I am, etc., .

C. G. Tripp. 26, Gordon Place, Kensington, London, June 15;
