GERALDINE COUNTY. COUNOIL. A meeting of the Cpuncil was held yesterday. Present J. Talbo, (Chairman), A. Sherratt, W. Balfourt R. McKay and J. Paterson. . '> CORRESPONDENCE. \ Correspondence was read \ . From the Land Office, ChristchurisiM asking for particulars of plantation belonging to the Council. The stated that he had replied to the efiiJH that the Council did not possess plantations. From the Ashburton County Council, stating that no satisfactory reply had been received to their letter of Jan. 16, and also asking for the payment of balance of interest, £163, being interest on the amount of the Council’s expenditure on the Rangitata Bridge since the completion of the work. The letter further stated that if the claim was not settled by August 16, the Council would take legal proceedings. Proposed by Mr Balfour, seconded by Mr Paterson and carried— “ That a Committee consisting of Messrs Moody, Sherratt and the Chairman be appointed to consider the payment of interest claimed by the Ashburton County Council, and report to the Council at next meeting.” From the Public Works Department, Wellington, giving a number of instructions as to the manner for applying for the grant made for re-building the Opihi Bridge. From the Mount Peel Road Board, asking for information with reference to the required assistance of the Boaid in building a stock bridge alongside the railway bridge over the Rangitata river.
From the Minister of Lands, in reply to the Council’s letter suggesting an amendment of the “Roads and Bridges Construction Act,” saying that ha would give the matter his attention during the next session.
From the SeKvyn and Ashburton County Councils agreeing to co-operate with the Council in trying to obtain an amendment in the Act. ■ -y From the Ashburton County Council / re the penalty incurred by Mr McCombe, contractor for the superstructure of the Rangitata Bridge, asking the Council’s opinion as to whether the penalty of £l6O should be enforced upon him. It was resolved to leave the matter entirely in the hands of the Ashburton County Council, and to inform them that r this was the first time the Council were v aware of any dispute with the contractor. GBRAIDINE TOWN BOARD. i It was proposed by Mr A. Sherra'lt, seconded by Mr Paterson, and carrier! ; “That all moneys received by this Council as license fees from the Geraldine Town District since the same was gazetted he refunded and placed to the credit of the Town Board in the Bank of New Zealand at Geraldine forthwith.” THE OPIHI BRIDGE A report was read from Mr Meason, A - C.E, on the progress of the Protective Works of the Opibi Bridge. He pointed out that more damage had been done since the plans were prepared, and therefore extra work would have to be done. He recommended also the construction of two groins, to cost about £7O, for ihe protection of the southern approach. The Chairman stated that since the construction of the new bridge, the river had been cuting awav the bank on either side. He had talked the matter over with j*tho engineer, and they bad worked out a scheme by wbicli the river could ha turned, by a very little expense, into t *0 middle of the bed. If this plan worked with success, a saving of hundreds of pounds would be effected. It was decided to leave the matter to , be dealt with by the Chairman, any expense incurred in the work to be limited to £3O.
