SOUTH GANTERBURY BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held last Thursday. PresentRev. G. Barclay (Chairman), Messre G. G. Russell, M. J. Gray, R. A. Barker, S. W. Goldsmith, and J. Talbot. Messrs Steward and Wakefield were granted leave of absence. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Among the resolutions recorded was one that did not appear in the report of that meeting, it having been considered in Committee and passed in open Board after the reporters had left the meeting. The resolution nlated to the Inspectorship, and was to the effect that the office be offered to Dr Anderson at L 450, and failing him, to Mr Grant at L4OO. Mr Talbot protested sgainet the adver* tieed salary being increased in favor of Dr Anderson.
The Chairman stated that during the month Miss Sutherland had resigned her position In „ the Pleasant Point School ; Mr. Grant, M.A., had /been appointed to the Mastership of the Waimate District High School, and Hr Campbell to the Belfield School. Dr Anderson had been appointed Rupee* tor. Mr Hammond’s position as In* spector terminated that day. Mr Hammond had been' appointed locum teams at the Waimate School until Mr Grant could take charge. A special examination of the Winchester School was to hare been held in June, and the teachers were under notice to leave, subject to the notice being withdrawn it the results of the examination were favorable. But the Inspector had been unable to take the examination, and his engagement having expired, in was resolved, on the motion of Mr Talbot, seconded by Mr Goldsmith School Committee be informed that the examination of will bo post* polled for « few week*, and sb«
teachers be informed that they may have the option of retaining their positions until the examination takes place.” Among the correspondence received, was a letter from the Education Department re the time for the examinations. The suggestion of the Chairman was adopted, that either just before or just, after Christmas appeared to be the best time, and it was agreed to add a second suggestion that the results of the teacher’s examination should be made known as soon as possibly. The Woodbury Committee asked for L7los for repairs and plastering, and to paper two rooms and a passage in the . master’s house. The Board objected to the papering, but thought the plastering should be repaired, and that enquiry should be made as to what that would cost. Mr Goldsmith suggested that perhaps L 4 would do the work. Oommittaes had got into the wav of asking for more than was wanted, knowing that the Board would reduce the amount. The Chairman said that there were in different parts of the district, reserves for school sites, which in some instances might not be wanted for years, and be thought they might be leased if the Board had power to do so. There wore four or fir* sections in the township of Geraldine, for which something could be got, and pieces of rural laud in different parts of the district. He had instructed the Secretary to write to the Land Office to inquire if the Board had power to lease these sites, and if an affirmative answer was received, there Were practical men on the Board who could draw up suitable conditions of lease. Mr Talbot said the Chairman deserved the the thanks of the Board for looking into the matter, for if they could let the land it would bring in something, and every little helped. Mr Barker suggested that as the Minister of Lands was now in the district, he might render some assistance. In reply to Mr Goldsmith, the Chairman said the Inspector had promised to have his report on the recent examination of pupil teachers ready to place before the Board that day, but be now informed him he could not have it ready before the evening.—The Chairman was empowered to accept the report, and at his discretion to publish the result. The meeting then terminated.
