The Tax on The Publicans. —The sum of £2500 was paid into the Corporation account, Wellington, as yearly revenue derived from the hotel licenses within that city.

Working Men’s Political Association, Geraldine. —A meeting of the members of this Association will be held in the Bush Hotel, Geraldine, at 8 o'clock this evening.

Masonic. —The brethren are informed that the regular monthly meeting of Lodge Southern Star, No. 619, S.C., will be held in the Masonic Hall, Geraldine, this evening, »t 7.30 o’clock.

Vital Statistics, Geraldine. The following are the vital statistics recorded in the Registrar’s Office, Geraldine, for the month ended June 30th, 1884 :—Births, 12; marriages, 0; deaths, 4.

Lamps job Temuka.—Tenders close tomorrow afternoon for providing four lamps for the Temuka Town Board. Found Dead.—An old man named Arthur Seresby, a commission agent, Christchurch, not haying been seen since Saturday, his office was broken open, when he was found on the floor dead. Deceased was a bachelor and lived alone.

The Waieabapa’s Excuesiow, The Wairarapa’s second excursion to the South Sea Islands is to commence next week. She sails for Fiji on Monday, The programme of the excursion will be the same as was drawn up for the trip just concluded.

Apbaid op an Enquibt.—Dr. Jones, the Medical Officer of the Destitute Asylum, Adelaide, has committed suicide, owing to the fact of an enquiry being about to be made as to the outbreak of ophthalmia among the children under his charge.

Bhitish and Foekign Bible Society, —Owing to the inability of the Rev W. G. Baker to attend a meeting of ministers and members of all denominations on Saturday evening next, as previously advertised, the meeting is postponed for the present. Mb Cox’s Meetings, A meeting of those electors desirous of assisting the return of Mr A. Cox for the Geraldine seat will be held in the Literary Institute, Geraldine, this evening at 7.30 o’clock. Mr Cox addresses the electors in the Volunteer Hall Temukai to-morrow night.

Mb Rollbston’s Meeting*. Mr Rolleston addressed a crowded meeting of electors at Temuka last evening, a report of which will be found elsewhere. To-night he will address a meeting at the Orari School’ room, and on Friday (to-morrow) evening he will address the electors in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Geraldine. The Defence of Victobia. —It is understood that his Excellency Sir Willim Jerrois has arranged to leave Wellington to pay a short visit to Melbourne on business connected with the defence of Victoria. His Excellency proceeds by the Wakatipu to Sydney, and will be absent about three weeks. Should the Governor be absent from New Zealand over a month, Mr Justice Johnston, as Acting-Chief Justice, will also perform the duties of Acting-Governor. Postal Shabtnkss. —As an instance of the careless way in which letters outwards are forwarded by some post offices we may mention that a letter posted not 50 miles from Hilton on 25th June last for a business firm in Geraldine (the address being very plainly written on the envelope), was forwarded to Christchurch, and from thence to Lyttelton (it bearing the postmark of both these places), and ultimately it found its way to its destination, being delivered in Geraldine on Tuesday last. Comment is needless.

Fatal Railway Accident. Patrick Kelly, aged 70, was accidentally killed on the railway between Remuera and Greenland by the 8.30 o’clock train last Tuesday evening from Auckland to Onehunga. As the train was about three yards of the first bridge from Remuera station, Robert Rennet saw a man lying on the line, who lifted up his head as the train approached and yelled out. The break was at once put on, but the train could not be stopped until it had passed over the body of the unfortunate man, who was mangled in a frightful umnaei. Conceet AT Hilton. —We woald remind our readers of the concert to bo held in the schoolroom at Hilton to-morrow evening. The programme, as published in another column, contains the names of many ladies and gentlemen who are well known to the music loving public, and are always ready to assist in any laudable object. As this concert has been arranged for the benefit of a gentleman who has won the esteem and respect of many friends, it is needless for us to add tha we hope to see a regular packed audience’ because we feel assured his friends will rally round him on this occasion, thereby giving substantial proof of their friendship.

Customs Rbtdbks. —The Customs returns for the colony for the mouth of June are now complete, with the exception of two smell districts, which are not likely to increase the amount by much. Last month the total collected was £102,996 as against £105,824 for the corresponding month last year. The principal amounts collected in the colony last month were Auckland, £22,757 ; Wellington, £17,765 ; Lyttelton, and Christchurch, £13,846; Dunedin £28,940. Compared with those of the corresponding period, 1883, Auckland, Thames, Russell, Hokianga, Kaipara, Tauranga, Nelson, Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunsdin, and Invercargill show a decrease, while Poverty Bay, Now Plymouth, Wanganui, Foxton, Wellington, Napier, Wairau, Christchurch, and Riverton have a slight increase. The Customs revsnue collected in May last was nearly £SOOO in excess of that received last month. The beer duty collected for the Juno quarter, 1884, was £3628, as against £4136 fer the corresponding period last year. The principal amounts last month were Auckland, £746 ; Wellington, £307; Dunedin, £B2O ; Christchurch, £729. The largest falling off was at the latter place.
