The only civil case was H. T. Clinch v. G-. Tetley claim £1 15s. Judgment by default for amount claimed and costs. The Court then adjourned.

Addbbsses.—Mr Kolleston will address the electors of the Geraldine district in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, to-morrow evening ; in the Schoolroom, Orari, on Thursday ; in the Oddfellows' Hall, G-eraldine, on Friday; and at the Schoolroom, Hilton, on Saturday. No doubt the whole of the meetings will be largely attended. Wbloomino Them Homb. —As the Hinemoa neared Onehunga wharf (Auckland) with the M.P's. qn board, the other day, an elector hoisted a board in a conspicuous place on the wharf, on which was, "Wei. come to the Unemployed." The Sergeant of Police, fearing it would give offence to the members of Assembly on board, pulled it down and threw it into the sea.

Public Meeting at Woodbury.—On Saturday evening last a public meeting was held in the schoolroom at Woodbury for the purpose of taking into consideration the advisability of requestiug the Geraldine County Council to construct a water-race in that part of the district. Mr Flatman occupied the chair. Several of the landed proprietors spoke adversely of the project, the result being that no steps will be taken in the direction indicated.

Gebaldihi Steeplechases Bbttliitg Day.—On Saturday evening last the settling up took place in the Crown Hotel, Geraldine, in regard to the recent steeplechases, the following being the result :—Mr P. Butler] the owner of Mustard, £123 10s ; Mr A. C. Jefferson, the owner of Ormidale, £57 ; Mr B. Boberts, the owner of Woodstock, the Club's cup, valued at £25 ; Mr T. Eably Lambs. —Mr Adam Jackson, the well-known sheep farmer and dealer,, of Ealing, on the banks of the Bangitata anticipates sending some early lambs into the market. He has about 100 prime crossbred ewes that commenced lambing last week, and notwithstanding the severity of the weather that wis experienced during the early part of the week all the lambs that have so far made their appearance are strong and healthy —Press.

The Depression and the Land Laws. — Mr W. Badger, a candidate for Stanmore, addressed a public meeting at Fhillipatown the other night. In the course of his speech be gave utterance to the following : —" A way of relieving the depression was by adopting fixed and certain land laws. Though the land laws were defective, all would agree that Mr Eolleston had worked hard for the country in this respect. But we could not disguise from ourselves the fact that large tracts of land had slipped from our hands. He considered that the system of perpetual leasing should be extended upon proper limits and conditions. It was a system which would commend itself to owners of public and private estates. The system should be so improved that ' a leaseholder in his old age should be relieved from the payment of rent, and be allowed the use of his land until death.' He approved of the conservation of our reserves." Mr Badger is evidently not a believer in the " Fixed Period."

Thk Gi-adstonk EtßCTioir. At th» Roman Catholic Church, Temuka, last Sunday, the Eev. Father Fauvel announced that he had received £lO from Mr J. H. Sutter, as a donation towards the convent at Kerry Town, and urged upon such of his flock as lived in th« Gladstone constituency to vote for that gentleman. This is very encouraging for Mr Twomey, who is also a candidate, and who migliTnaturally eipecfc support from that quarter. It i», however, prohably due to a report having been spread to the effect that Mr Twomey was opposed to any assistance being given to Catholic Schools. "We are in a position to say that this is absolutely false. He never was, and never will be, opposed to assistance being given to Catholic Schools. Not long since he was accused of favoring Mr Postlethwaite because he gave £lO to the Catholic Church at Geraldine, and now he is accused of be;ng opposed lo Catholic education. In one instance he is charged with being too Catholic, in the other he is charged with not being Catholic enough. It is not easy for him to steer clear between such conflicting charges, but it is to be hoped he will always be able to despise bigotry wherever he meets with it. Those who know him will not believe that he is likely to either forsake his principles or indulge in adulation of the donor of a few pounds to a church in Geraldino. <

Cbioket. —The cricket match batweon the Australian Eleven and the G-entlemen of England concluded on Saturday last, the Australians winning, with 46 runs to spare. The New Zealand director! are Messrs Edward John Spence (Chair- 1 man), W. J. M Larnach, C.M.G., M.H.E., ] Eobert Stout, and G. Maclean, M.L.C.— better men than whom for the position they hold could hardly be found. In addition to the ordinary assurance policies this Society w offering " Tontine" life assurance, for which special advantages as an investment are claimed. The policies issued by this Society • are unconditional from date of issue—a great consideration. At the end of the first ten years' existence of the Society, 20,000 policies are in force for .£5,000,000, and the annusA>> income is £200,000. This shows the con- ■■ fidence that is reposed by the public in it. Mr J. Ashwell is the Temuka agent. At present Mr H. Cowper is canvassing the district, and will be very happy to give full particulars as to the special advantages offered.
